Stumbled on this video about feral cat control in Australia. Perked my interest since I was recently in Hawaii where i didn't realize they have a huge feral cat problem that plays havoc with the native birds.

There is the idea that killing the stupider cats leaves you with smarter cats:
Culling pest animals can do more harm than good (Tasmania)

While .410 has been in short supply as of late, one product that has been and still is widely available is less-lethal rubber buckshot. We didn't used to have it, but we have it now.

When it comes to cats and dogs, I hope that, going forward, more people will take advantage of the the opportunity to not kill (when appropriate).

How does that solve the problem of a feral over-population??.

My buddy uses a 12g for pests like feral cats and some birds that give him problems, I’ve always been a .22lr kind of guy anytime I have a smaller problem animal to deal with around the farm. Cheap to feed and quick/humane kills, plus the neighbors don’t care.

By their logic we should abandon all game bag limits, and have no closed seasons. The more you shoot the more the population would grow.:)

It worked so good with the bison.

Perhaps those that protest against culling should go out and train all the old tomcats to wear a condom. Maybe some one could send them a gunny sack with a few old Toms to practice on.

the Problem of stray cats is if you start to feed them ... then you get racoons / skunks / foxes etc

if you want to feed the stray cats you also have to catch them and get them fixed / rabies shots etc

Saw a possible rabies racoon tonight, was driving towards it and it stayed in the center of the road... just walked over to the other side of the road ( a car was coming)
usually a coon will hightail it for the road side / trees/ cover

Grew up on a commercial chicken farm, shot lots of feral cats over the years, the odd one is smarter. Took years to kill a one eyed mean old tabby Tom who absorbed many pellets that was clever and went nocturnal. By the end, with two kids upgraded to .22s, human ingenuity won and we no longer had a feral cat problem.

I have watched several of those Australian feral cat videos on YouTube, very interesting. They seem to do quite well with both 17hmr and 22WMR.

We had some wacko lady tell us a few years back when gophers where eating thousands of $ of crops we should just move them.
Rubber buck shot? what the hell is that going to do, break their bones I guess so you can pick them up?
I love dogs , and some cats, but 3 people are dead, kids and a older lady because of asses don't look after their animals.
Some take in way too many, we had one , house was a disaster, them the shelters are over run when they have to give up 20-50 cats.
The city people drive out in the country to a farm or 5 and kick their animals out because they can't be bothered with them anymore.

But I sure do not like shooting them, but will if I have to.
