Shooting Chronograph

I bought my F1 Master right from the factory, at $120 shipped to my door. It has the remote display, the F1 at Lebaron doesn't.

+1 for ordering directly from the manufacturer. They are shipped from Ontario and shipping is a fixed $8.95 or there-abouts. I ended up with an F-1 Master to my door with taxes for under $120.

Much, much, much better than dealing with the EBay hassles.

+1 for the F1 chrony. mine works great indoors / outdoors .

Timmins eh? Went to highschool there...

Yeah, the chrony will give values indoors and outdoors, but those values change depending on the lighting. I tested the same batch of low ES precision ammo shooting it through both the Chrony and the CED (in line). I tested it indoors and outdoors under varying light conditions (sun, clouds, etc...), same temperature. The CED results didn't shift significantly, the Chrony numbers did.

Chrony is fine for pistol and hunting loads, but I don't trust it for my long range loads where accurately knowing the true velocity is important.

I have a CED Millennium with the IR screens. Its an excellent piece of kit that even talks to you. Also, the screens are seaprate from the body so you're unlikely to put a bullet through the expensive part.

Hi all,

I am seeking advice on a shooting chronograph so that I can make load development go a little more efficiently.

Any recommendations on what you may have (or not have) had success with in the past would be most appreciated.

I am currently leaning toward the SHOOTING CHRONY F1 MASTER and see one on EBay for just about $120 shipped (plus duties I would guess?)

I also see that Omineca Sports in Vanderhoof has them for about $160, not sure if they have free shipping or not but it will obviously have taxes applied to it as well.

What are your thoughts on chronographs? Do these seem like typical pricing?

Cheers and thanks for any advice you can offer, Bob

According to their website, you can buy a refurbished Chrony Beta model direct from Shooting Chrony for US$64 + shipping, which should be a total of about $80-$90. Comes with full warranty, etc. See the website for details. They are a Canadian company by the way.

Mine's the Chrony Alpha Master. The display sits right on the bench with me via a long cord. It can be switched from fps to mps but I keep it on fps. I've had it for a few years now and with the exception of the skyscreens popping off due to muzzleblast now & then, it works just fine. I wouldn't develop new loads without one now. Just ensure you always use a fresh battery when you haven't used it for a spell.

TH&VS ?

Only used it once indoors, need the diffusers and extra lights, was pretty consistent but I dont' have anything to compare to. Was testing with a friend's crazy rws pellet gun - 1200 fps wasnt' too bad.

True that its probably not the fanciest one out there. I just build up loads for hunting so its good enough for me.

Others have given their opinions on "best" models.

As for actually shooting through it, in view of the many "hardware malfunctions" (chrony destruction) by some, I use a strip of duct tape placed horizontally between two of the upright rods, about half way up to the diffuser panels. That becomes my aiming point, safely above the chrony. Haven't shot mine yet.....cheers!

if you can find an Oehler 35 they are the Sh*t! but they are discontinued, however, they are the standard by which all other's are judged..i just have a shooting chrony but no problems so far even has a cool printer which prints every shot so you don't have to write it down. i want the Oehler ballistic system which measures everything...pressure, velocity now that's the ticket if you have 2 Grand.

Wow! Thanks so much for all the information guys, much appreciated.

For now, I am thinking the CED M2 is the route to go even though they are a bit more costly than the Chrony.

Is anyone interested in attempting a group purchase?

If there is some interest I will look into what we can do, I would really like to find a Canadian dealer that would be willing to bring them in and with a bit of volume we might be able to have them do it.

Let me know if you are interested in participating.

Cheers, Bob
