Shooting Chrony and their crummy software

Just prettying up the user interface a bit:

Its now to the point where I have to do fix ups to make it a bit more useful before adding features to it (like showing the shots in a string).

The real trick to all this is how to get the Chrony to communicate with a computer or phone. Computers are easy as USB-DB9 adapters are abound. To communicate with my phone I had to find a Bluetooth-DB9 adapter, which wasn't cheap (relatively speaking).

I really like that interface. That's the same info I usually write down from my 'master beta' (lol) and in the same order no less.

Good work!

Have you thought of posting on xda for hints on how to interface? Going through BT seems like a bit of a pain but I understand why you went that route.

Plugging the chrony into my phone or computer, and having the option to download a text file would be awesome.

Definitely interested if you pull it off.

So, spent some time tweaking/adjusting things, and figured I'd upload a video to YouTube of the changes and updates. It's not ready for general consumption (notice that the first shot string appears twice), but things are slowly coming along.

There is a variety of velocities broken up by shot string. I'm going by memory here but:

  • first two (i.e. shot string # 0 to #3 in the video) are 9mm Parabellum (from an XD-9)
  • string #3 is 7.62x25mm (Tokarev)
  • string #4 is .40 S&W (from a PT-101)
  • string #5 is .45ACP (my friends Norinco M1911 clone)
  • string #6 is Norinco 7.62 (out of my M305)

Well to start with Wow man You have done a nice job. Now for my questions.
Will it work for the Gamma Master?
What items do I need to get and where do I get them?
Where can I buy the app You have made for my android?

doing the statistics by string# is not the best way imo
what if one of the shots in the string is erratic (too much vibration/smoke//dust)?
what if I load 7 rounds of each powder charge?
what if a shot doesn't register?
all the above would shift the content of the strings rendering string statistics unusable

think of putting each shot in a queue and group the shots in "groups"
give the operator the option to nix the entry
give the operator the option to start and end a shot group

Doesn't the Gamma Master give a print-out of all the strings?

Yes it does but the printer and print out is a PITA. I'd much rather have the info on my phone. Also shoot alot in snow or rain and a tiny bit of water on the carbon paper and it's useless.

All good points.

Right now this is all an artifact of how the Chrony works. By default the, Chrony Beta Master gives you 6 strings of 10 shots. Why 10 shots? Well because Shooting Chrony's manual says you need 10 shots to be statistically relevant (I question this claim). All this program does is connect to the Chrony and suck down everything in memory.

Not to to sure how the "shot string" is conceptually different from a "shot group", other than with a "shot group" the user can pick the shots for each group (I like this idea BTW). With a shot string, if you only load 7 rounds, then you would only use 7 out of the 10 shot string/group. If a shot doesn't register then you would have one less shot to deal with. Allowing the user to "cleanup" the string/group will work in either case.

Will it work on the Gamma Master? I believe so, but I would need to acquire and test on the Gamma. The Beta and the Gamma do look very similar. However, right now the app isn't generally available as I'm still working on it. Also, I need to figure out a more economical way to connect to the device. The bluetooth cable contraption I'm using isn't cheap.

Great work I'm in the market for a Chrony but will wait to see how this develops before buying one ..

Useful app Software is everything....

Thanks for the encouragement everyone.

It might be a while before this is on Google Play or the Apple App store. I'm doing this mostly on my spare time as a pet project. I started out doing this for myself because, well, the Chrony software sucks. To be honest, I'm a bit surprised at the interest. And I suspect that I have to find a cheap way to connect to two devices together. $90 in parts to add bluetooth to the Chrony is kind of unreasonable IMHO.

I just invested in a Beta Master and this is VERY interesting! I'd love a copy of the android app even if it is a work in progress! Please keep it up!
We use BT DB9 RS232 etc all the time at work so I see if our sparky's in engineering or product development have any bright ideas once I have a physical unit to let them work on to pair up to my android cell.

I've got a blog post on my current setup. Ideally what I'd like to do is have a 3.5mm cable wired directly to a bluetooth module as a single, solid, component. I'm very confident that is feasible, I just need to ask the right questions of the right people. By all means PM me if you find something out - I'll send you my phone number/email if it makes things easier.

It's the software that will be hard :).

Take a look on Brian Enos' site. A lot of people including myself have built a bluetooth adapter for the Competition Electronics ProChrono. Competition is coming out with their own version early this year and the software looks quite interesting.
