I have seen pictures of the Shooting Chrony and like it's stone-hammer simplicity... would this be a good choice for mainly handgun applications, I shoot a lot of black powder which tends to spew a lot of crap out the front so would this affect what chrony to get??

I have the Alpha model and it works just fine. I initially only loaded pistol when I bought it about 10 years ago. It is also able to accept upgrades such as a remote display and a printer if you want it down the road.

They do have protective screens for black powder use, but you could make your own fairly cheap. I like the fact that you can send it to a Canadian address for repair if needed and to buy parts/accessories.

I bought the gamma master with printer and remote display for a bit over $200.00
I then bought the Chrony LED Lamps for indoor use and the carry case.
All in all I'm very happy with its performance.

Got me a basic model a while ago. Put about 100 rounds over it this weekend, 22, 9mm, 264 mag and it worked great. For my needs it works fine. If you need a sheild for the screen a piece of plexiglass would work perfectly

I shot mine twice last time I was out. Just clipped the front rod both times and it still seems to work.
