Shooting Distance

why is it insane to hunt with a M14? i see no problem with it, hell.....on a regular basis, i take my M1 Carbine out and knock down a few deer each fall. its a very good "bush" gun....i personally see no reason why one couldn't use a m14 for hunting both moose and deer.

but this is just my two cents

cheers

I think I need more practice :)

So what are we looking at here?

Off hand, on the bench with or without a rest, what ammo, what?

What's your 100yd group size. Can't adjust a scope when you're shooting 12" groups, or shooting unreliable groups.

Did you start at 25yds and work up?

May have nothing to do with you. May have everything to do with your ammo or the scope/mount settling.

Shoot for group first, then adjust the scope to suite your situation.

I was using .308 American Eagle, I started at 25 yards until the groups were reasonable then moved up.

A makeshift benchrest was employed which consisted of my bag.

I am thinking of setting everything back to zero and starting at 25 again.

That should work, shoot 5 shots aiming for center of target, then adjust your scope to wherever the middle of the group is. Don't bother resetting the scope as it may be fairly close right now, resetting it may very well bring you off paper, even that close.
Try making some bags out of some old pant legs filled with sand, fine gravel, even rice or beans (dry of course.)

Like any rifle you have to tune the gun, and the ammo. I cannot see why it would be insane to hunt with one..

Here is 10 shots at 100 yards, with a scope.

That 41.5 grains of imr4895 is a great load with 150 grain, 168 grain and apparently 178grain bullets, just waiting on my scope mount then i hope to print some groups like that,

yeah what tuning is done on your rifle roberti?

Norc Reciever
Douglas 1:10 Heavy bbl, installed in Hungry's basement!
TRW bolt
NM spring guide (Badger), Wolf spring.
Norc OpRod
NM stock
Unitized NM gas system from Brownell's

Bassett Machine scope mount, super sniper 10x scope.

I really like the Bassett mounts, on the day I shot this group I was having problems getting brass to cycle (it turned out the problem was soft norma brass), so I took the rifle apart 5 times, and removed the scope mount each time.

At the end of the day I put it back together for the 5th time and without any rezeroing I shot this group.

how much did the bolt improve your shooting?
If you installed it on the same day you did your heavy barrel, I don't even want to know though! :D

I have not compared them head to head, but I can tell you that the headspace on my Norc bolt was about 10 thou, and on my USGI bolt it is about +2 thou. The exact fit is a bit of the luck of the draw depending on your bbl and receiver. If the headspace is too tight then you may be stuck using a pull thru reamer to get it to a safe depth, I have heard of some USGI + Norc reciever combo's that were -2thou, that is a formula for disaster unless you know what you are doing.

I shoot mine with the iron sight and am quite confidant in a clean kill at 200 yards or less without much of a problem. at least, thats what the poor popcans I victimized would tell you if he was still here, R.I.P poor poor Pepsi cans:D
