Shooting from sitting in a chair

In this years Ontario provs. there are two stages in which the gun is sitting loaded on the table, and shooter is sitting on a chair. One stage is weak hand, one stage is strong hand.

Any reason why we wouldn't shoot from the "sitting in a chair" position rather than spend the time of getting up before starting to shoot?

These are short stages, so every second counts.

No.

"Sitting relaxed on chair. Gun is loaded and placed on the mark on
the table.
Procedure: On start signal, engage targets T1 to T4 weak hand only from
within the shooting area."

That's what I figured. But I've been to about 20 level 1 or 2 IPSC competitions in the last few years, and don't recall ever seeing anyone shooting while sitting from a chair, so I wondered about it.

Also, when I am shooting one hand from a chair, the other hand would go on my knee or thigh to improve stability, I guess.

Thanks.

That would suggest that it is up to the shooter to solve the problem, being in the shooting area the only stipulation.

Have a look at rule 10.2.8 for procedurals on strong/weak hand stages. Easy to get yourself into trouble on the issue of "support".

I didn't see anyone take the time to stand up.

ShootI agree:agree:

Although this should be a great reminder to the course designers to stipulate things if they care about them. We usually say 1.how to do it or 2.how you cant do it or 3.we dont care just be safe and figure it out. Just to provide clarification for the participants.

I shoot them sitting too, I place my shoulder around 90 degree to be more comfortable and place my other hand on chest... something like I was standing, but try to avoid putting the other hand on knee... some shooter was advice that could be supporting... as the rule 10.2.8...

So.. normally I stand up as I grab the gun. In any of the stages I've shot you could stand as fast as you could grab the gun, so it made more sense to stand and shoot as you normally would. If the position of the chair limited you from doing that, then shoot seated, but for me, I prefer to stand normally whenever that's a possibility.

If it had been an unloaded start sure stand but it wasn't any problem from sitting position. It was a retangular wood bench so you could position your body in anyway.

Bottom line - today, watching the shooting, the Standard class winner and world champion (Grauffel) the Open class winner (Skazaks) both stood up to shoot.

I tried shooting one stage standing, one stage sitting. I couldn't believe how unsteady I felt shooting the stage from a sitting position.

So, standing up is the answer as far as I can tell.

I got dinged on that stage for having my non shooting hand on my lap rather than hanging naturally by the side. The ro claimed I supported myself but that doesn't make any sense. How much support you get from having your hand on your lap? To make a long story short, the rm removed that procedural because according to the rulebook, having a hand on your lap doesn't qualify as being supported.

The actual answer is to grab your pistol with one hand, flip the table over with your other, and take cover behind it while blasting away and screaming at the top of your lungs.

Just like an '80's action hero. ;)
