Shooting hunting ammo

Hi,

I have a Savage 110 with a brand new Gaillard barrel in 300WM and I was wondering if I can shoot cheap hunting ammo for breaking the barrel in and start zeroing the scope. IMO there's nothing wrong with that but I just want specialists confirmation :D

I personally wouldn't waste ammo on "Breaking in" a custom, hand-lapped, button rifled barrel - period. I've never broken in any Gaillard barrels and they shoot and clean just fine.
 
Why waste 50 of the most accurate shots that barrel will give you?

With that cartridge, the first 500 to 800rds are going to be that barrel's best. Work up a load with good bullets and enjoy...

i don't want to start the "war" between breaking in or not, but most of my reading recommend it (but they speak about factory barrel).
And I don't want to use match ammo just to set the scope on paper and feeling the trigger; so I just want to make sure I won't "damage" the barrel by shooting hunting ammo.

BTW I have a twist of 1/10 and will be shooting 180gr hunting ammo then 190 gr match ammo (not ready for reloading yet). Anything wrong with my choice ?

It won't hurt the barrel to shoot factory ammunition.
Can't see the point though. Might as well zero the scope with the ammuntion that you are going to be using. Switch loads and you will have to rezero anyway. I would expect that factory ammunition is going to be more expensive than handloaded target grade. 1:10 will be just fine for the bullets you mention.
 
Well, I just mount the scope so I don't want to waste ammo before being close to my zero. Also I'm new with a one stage trigger, and last reason : my match ammo is still in the mail :D

"...don't want to waste ammo before..." Have the rifle bore sighted. That'll put you on paper. If you're going to use the rifle for long range target shooting, you'll be constantly changing the sights anyway.
"...not ready for reloading yet..." Get ready. Using factory ammo out of a custom rifle is like using regular gas in a Ferrari.
