Shooting long range with 7.62x39

Carbonrod, you might want to specify that if for NSCC Service Rifle and not NSCC Sniper/Precision Rifle. There is no 500m deliberate in the later... and given the forum you're posting this in.

Service Rifle was mentioned. Long range is subjective, especially considering the cartridge involved in this thread.

Open sited from my CZ858, with the help of my spotter, walk rounds onto hits on a steel ram at 550yds. The open sites are accurate in 100yd incruments and I think they go up to 800yds but it's really hard to see hits without a spotting scope at that distance aside from being accurate with the open sites provided. I've since scoped the rifle and look forward to seeing how far out I can drop rounds accurately.

In preperationg for shooting longer distances with the CZ, I've taken the liberty of pulling about 50rds to weigh the consistency of powder using my AcuLab scale and I'm impressed with how accurate the bulk ammo is.

I'm glad someone else has shared this experience as well! I was excited as all heck after my first gong ringing experience at 545yds so put up a thread, and WOW the flaming that I got from the non-believers of the 858! With a spotter correcting aim for you it is a fantastic experience, and I was immensely impressed with the accuracy of the factory open sights also! Just something awesomely fun about whackin steel at 500+ with a "surplus shooter" :).

:agree:

For the record, I made most of the hits...

Sorry to say but surplus won't take you much past 300m, past 200m it's more "to who it may concern" then "willfull destruction of a marked back stop"...

Random(ish) hits at 500m I can see...

Test subjects

1951 Tula with irons, known to group 10rnds into 2.5" with perfect repeatability

Starting at 100m prone with a sand bag

5rnds, 100m, group 1.75" on 5" black bull pistol target
5rnds, 200m, group 5.0" on black bull pistol target
Shot 20rnds at target, lots of vertical spread and 3 fliers... Gave up here

Robinson XCR with buschnell 3200 x10 target

Prone on a sand bag
100m group 1.5" 10rnds
200m group 3" 10rnds

Just my casual observations from yesterday...
I know both rifles shoot a bit better with S&B soft point so 500m with a tuned load would be easily attainable... But that surplus is a bit unpredictable at longer ranges.

My .02

I was wondering if anyone has tried to make any long range shots with a 7.62X39. I wanna try one out to a mile and i looked at a ballistic chart for that caliber and in theory it should work. im not conserned to much about being accurate i just wana be able to hit the target.

Why not live and learn.

I would start with the rifle zeroed for 200 yards with the open sights and see where the 1000 yard iron sights can take you(1 km). Sounds like a lot of fun...

Please keep us posted on results... If I could, I would do the same just for the hell of it.:D
