Is it wise to shoot an M-14 without flash hider set screw?

I just switched my Norinco Flash Hider with one from an M14/M1A and the Norc set screw dosen't fit and I have none for the other.

I hear you. I cannot say that I've experienced this.... Your castle nut will only loosen by itself. Unsure at what rate it will loosen, sounds like an interesting experiment.....

Sounds like a plan. And I might I say, my M-14 looks way more evil now that it's bayo lug isn't nutiered.

someday when you have the time, takethe flash hider to rona or whatever you have in your area and look for a standard thread screw that will fit it.

It doesnt have to be a grub screw, it wont be as pro looking, but you can cut any screw to the right length and then use a hacksaw or dremel disk to cut a flathead screwdriver notch in the end. A dap of cold blueing and you wont even notice it at a glance.

I did this when I put an AR180 gas block on my AR180B. Worked great and is still holding.

(As you can see I have a pet peve about rifles with no bayo lugs:D )

When the nut comes loose, and it will, your flash hider will loosen up and your rounds will strike the hider. I suggest you do not shoot it untill you have a screw installed, or as suggested above, loc-tite it in place.

Can you share where you got the M1A/M14 flash hider?

just in case you need to know, the usgi set screw is a 6x40 hex, .070 long- i have got them at bolt supply house and general fasteners- i don't know what the norc is, but the guys over at bsh have been pretty good about finding oddball hexes for me- and the wrenches to match

T-Star: The Hex screw I'm looking for is for USGI (or possibly M1A). I've put an ad out here on CGN but no luck and I'd really like to have one.

ok, here's the specs
federal stock number 5305-042-6426
SETSCREW:HEX SOCKET,NONSTD PT, 0.092 MAX DIAMETER, .070LG, S, PHOS-CTD,NO 6-40 UNF-3A, 1/4LG- 7790300, 19204
BASICALY, IT'S A 6X40 HEX HEAD SCREW, 1/4 LONG-hungry has stated that he's used 6x32s in there- i know you can get 6x32s at canadian tire- i've seen them- and some place like a general fasteners or bolt supply house or a machine shop might have the real thing, not just a field expedient

you've got me confused- did you replace your barrel with a usgi or is it still the norinco?- if it's the norinco, then it's the NORINCO set screw (METRIC) you need- you're dealing with the threads that are in the barrel, the flashider has nothing to do with it
