Most of your spotting is done with your rifle. freeland makes a the best tripod i have used. you can use it and stay in the prone position and use it. just leave your scope and after your knelling or whatever you are in and just gat down behind your scope and plot you shots.

I use an Arktis one...don't know if they make them anymore, but it is a tri-fold type. I'd recommend this type over one of the roll-ups.
Half of our firing points are in the dirt/mud/rocks so that is the only reason I have one...If our range was half as nice as the groomed golf course lawn that is a few military ranges, I'd not bother with it.

For the Service Rifle game, a mat is really a PITA to haul around because in the ORA we are shooting the new CFSAC matches 1-4 (read: no time to set up a mat and then move to the next firing point / mound).

Now for Precision Rifle, that's another story. I like to use a combination rifle case and mat for my M70 Stealth like this one:

Mind you that BHI version is $ 175 give or take. Since I'm too goofy to deploy to the 'Stan, a ZXhinese knock off (Voodoo? NcStar? TacForce?) will do the job for around $ 100. Hey, I'm a mirror kommando and it's not worth spending lots of $$ on features I'll never use, like stalking. The only critters I stalk are earth pigs!

As you can see, spending $ 100's of dollars is not justified. So Zhinese knockoff stuff will work the the hunting fields.

Buy what works for your game, budget, color scheme, and finally LCV (look cool value)...

I will be going the cannaught only and shoot the old course of 1 to 12 match and super sniper.....

I would suggest that the mat be left behind for matches 1-12 as well. You will quickly find that all that extra kit is not worth the trouble of packing up and carrying around and the rest of the competitors will be tired of waiting for you to get your stuff sorted out.

For comfort during zeroing, or load development etc. I second the old carpet cutoff idea. I did this last year when I was shooting on a patch of poison ivy and a thin, closed loop carpet with a slightly rubberized backing worked great.

I have the same one and have used it in all conditions from +45C to -35C sun and rain and haven't had a problem with it in 3 years.

I bought mine from FabSports.

I like that you can put the rifle, ammo, log book, and spotting scope in there and you only have 1 bag to take to the range and it doubles as a mat. Not quite like my drag bags, there's not really an option to lay on them comfortably.
