shooting moose with .270 WIN caliber?

A 150g, .270 win round will drop a large bull moose like a ton of bricks!!

Well, I'm not sure many moose have ever dropped "like a ton of bricks". ;)

Most I have seen seem to think about it a bit before they lie down, no matter what they are shot with. Way too often, for me at least, they manage to walk off a bit into something really ugly before they lie down. Looking forward to the next one that drops "like a ton of bricks" when I use the .270 again. It is, by the way, a perfectly useful moose round.

Why the thumbs down on the Barnes? Many, many shooters are getting great accuracy and performance with the TSX.

.

I personally have had 2 failures with the Barmes bullets.......zero expansion and complete pinhole pass thru on one the second bullet was recovered between the third and fourth rib of a 3 year old bull moose this past fall shot quartering towards me at 125yds. The caliber by the way was 30 06. I sent an email to Barnes and they asked if I could mail them the bullet which I did and am awaiting the results. They suggest it may have been a plugged cavity....but if I have to be that carefull with my ammo rattling around in my pocket I'd rather not have them. I once was a loyal follower of Barnes Bullets but now have a rather sour taste in my mouth for them, unless Barnes can shed some reasonable light on this problem.

My experience on several moose is consistent with Stubblejumper (comment #23) in that they may not drop immediately but don't go far. My favorite slug is the 150 Nosler Partition - 'nuff said.

270 is a great caliber for moose! If your shootin factory stuff only....get a box of the Premium Winchester Black box stuff..Accubonds will do the job nicely...remember speed kils...but accuracy kills more!

A 270 is more than enough, especially with the bullets that are available today. Just because the cartridge didn't knock a moose off its feet in dramatic fashion doesn't mean that it didn't do the job. A well placed shot = dead moose.

Last hunt 4 guys. I was the only guy with a 3006. The other 3 had 270's Yup it drops moose. Saw it drop, cleaned it , ate it.

My next rifle very soon 270.

270 with a good 150gr bullet will work on moose, put them in the boiler room and eat some moose,As always watch your range and get him broadside

.270 & Moose

Our Moose hunting party have all taken Moose with:
.270
7mm Mag
30.06
.338
First shot kills...But, all three hunters know how to shoot accurately to Heart and Lungs.
Hope that answers your question.
IMO Its not cal of rifle, but, accuracy of the hunter, and being realistic about distances.

Me too. He asked it in 2011.

Swift A Frame, Nosler Partition, Sierre Boat Tail Game King; Fusion, Power Point. All of these bullets hit hard and once can expect good expansion. There are others but the ones listed are classic hunting bullets. I'm sure 130 grainer are fine but I use 140 or 150 grainers in the 270. I favor the 150 grainers the most. If your using factory ammo and don't mind buying a few boxes of different brands and loads. You will find that some shoot better in warmer weather while others shoot better in colder weather.

Hi,

I have nice tikka t3 lite blued in .270 Win that shoots 1 inch at 100 m with 150 GR bullet and do not want to buy extra rife in 30-06 caliber. I am not sure, but it seams that 150 GB is too small for moose? Does some has good (or bad) experience shooting moose with 150GR bullets?
According to HOGDON you can load .270 win with up 160gr and up to 180Gr bullets.
Does anyone loaded .270 win with 160gr or 180 gr? How does it shoot? any recopies to tikka t3 like blued with 160gr or 180gr?

Thanks,
Joe

Hey Joe, A Ruger tang safety M77 in .270 was my first rifle in 1982, and I've shot about two dozen elk, two dozen moose, and a few dozen deer with it...150 grain Nosler Partitions take down everything beautifully.

Glad you said it, I was thinking the same damn thing.
I would shoot a moose any day with a 270 and 130 gr bullet. If 270 is what you have and the 150gr is what you shoot then thats what I would use. All the comments on doubt on the 270 and moose is hooey. Listen to the guys that have shot lots of moose. Man there's a #### load of moose bin shot with a 30-30 and some of these guys doubt a 270???????----give your head a shake----Cowboy

These threads always crack me up, I'm kinda glad it was dug up. Of course a .270 win is plenty to shoot a moose with, no question. And you don't need a special hand load or high price factory load to do it.

It's almost too much gun .... Kinda like swatting a fly with a 12ga ...

Just kidding ;), you're fine...

I have one of those bug-a-salt guns its an air powered salt shot gun dang is that fun for shooting flies...

A good friend of mine hunts with .22 lr, .410 and .270 she has dropped deer elk moose bore no problem at all, She only uses 130 gr loads.

I took a nice bull moose with the 270 win loaded with the federal 130 gr. trophy copper bullet a few days ago. I have to say the bullet preformance was excellent.
