Shooting my new #5...ouch!!!

There must be something about the stock design of the Lee Enfield. I find that they are not bad offhand, but kick hard from the bench. A PAST shoulder pad really helps.

Well, you could make up some reduced target loads. Less felt recoil and reasonably accurate.

That being said, I can shoot one with full loads and I'm a 98 pound weakling with little girl arms so go figure.:D

Well I bought a slip on recoil pad for my gun. Two benefits, first it lengthens out the stock by an inch which helps as I have long arms and it should reduce the thump a bit. I shoot cast mainly so recoil normally is not much of a factor.

Take Care

The legend as I have heard it is that as Britain considered a shorter, lighter rifle for the latter era of WWII, they also thought about it being the universal issue, to paratroops and all.

The rubber pad on the butt of the No5 was intended to protect the butt (with it's longitudinally bored channels to save weight) from splitting on contacting the ground with paras.

I find No1s and No4s fine to shoot with the "full size" metal plate, that at least has some anatomically correct curve. That wee little flat hockey puck on the butt of a No5 sure does function well to concentrate the felt recoil into about 50% of the surface area of a full size Enfield!

The impressive muzzle blast does not help one's perception, neither!

But, they sure is fun!

I spent some time at the bench with my first No5, after the first session (with surplus ball) my Dad nearly had a heart attack giggling at me and my whining (ex-British Army in the '50's). For the next session I bought a PAST shoulder pad, no issues after that, and you can protect your manhood by wearing it under your jacket in the winter.

We have conducted 15 Milshoots with an average of 20 shooters each time and we have never had a shooter use any kind of recoil pad - all steel buttplates. We shoot 50 rounds in the span of about an hour, and the guys (and gals) use everything from the (feared  ) Jungle Carbine, to Mosin M44 to Mausers in 8mm and even Shotguns - never a complaint.

You guys should be embarassed! Seriously.
