shooting old ammo?

hey guys, a buddy of mine recently gave me an enfield that he had no use for and along with it a box of old ammo

how safe is this stuff to shoot? i figure as long as it doesnt have any damage to the case it should be fine but i wanted to be sure
 
If you give us a veiw of the headstamp we can see the date and company of manufacture, or you can google ".303 headstamps" and look it up yourself. Every piece of old military ball ammo I ever shot went "bang" except the egyptian stuff. I recently fired some WWII brit and Canadian ammo and no problem at all. If the ammo shows no signs of corrosion or damage I don't see any reason not to shoot it. It would be nice to see a pic of the rifle as well. Have fun.
 
1945 or 1950 isnt old for ammo.
If it was 1914, it would probably still fire just fine, but then you would face the wrath of cartridge collectors for blowing off WW1 dated ammo.
 
good to know thanks, i took some pics of the gun and head stamp, sadly this one is sporterized, i now have two of them, this isnt as old as my other enfield which is from 1916 and has been in my wifes family for 40+ years and was a gift from my inlaws last year, that one has been sporterized as well sadly, but its still a fun gun to shoot and feels like it wants to remove my shoulder each time i take it to the range.

good to know thanks, if itll offend anyone that im shooting it theyre welcome to trade me shot for shot for new ammo and they can do what they want with this. otherwise i think itll get shot off soon
 
Last time me and my moose hunting buddies went out we were shooting some old tarnished mk4 (I think) it was 1912 ammo. Some of it was black with corrosion .. Still went bang and no one died (~100 rds)

if that is the reloadable brass some people will pay decent money for the brass... No idea why I had some of it and it was hard to size and I never did load it... Gave it to some older guy at the range who seemed to bet wetting himself over it
 
Check for corrosion. If there's any discolouration I wouldn't shoot it. If it looks like new, blast away!
Here's one casing from some old DA 308 I shot through an M14 many years ago. Minor ka-boom from the gas being vented where it ought not to (was the last shot in the box). The box grouped worth sh#t, which was no surprise. Note the discolouration on the casing.

from what i can tell all of the brass looks like the one picture i posted in the original thread, didnt see anything that looked like the piece you posted with the hole in it, that being said, are the bullets i have worth anything to the ammo collectors or should i just fire them off and toss the brass. i have no interest in re loading for this gun with how little i shoot it
