Shooting on Crown Land?

I've just recently purchased a new rimfire rifle and am currently in the process of joining the NSRA in order to hace access to their range but I was wondering if its legal to shoot targets and go plinking on Crown Land? Maybe on empty beaches facing the ocean?

Also, I've asked some local if I could shoot on their land? What are the legalities on this? I have all proper documentation and would use appropriate measures to ensure that my target and anything beyond it is clear. I also have a custom made backdrop which will stop .22 LR rounds even from point blank.

Any input would be appreciated, especially from LEO's.

I've always hunted on Crown land without any problem. Just set yourself up to shoot into a good backstop and if you shoot a lot in one place, clean up the brass and targets afterwards. If you get more than 100 yards away from anyone else they will scarcely hear your 22 rimfire shots anyway, especially if you are shooting away from them and have any sort of dunes or foliage between you.
Do not leave your rifle down to go look at your targets, carry it with you. Someone else can pick it up when your back is turned.
There were a couple of picnic benches at one spot on Crown land and a guy was shooting his .223 at a 100 yard target. He put his still loaded rifle down on the one bench and walked downrange to look at his target.
I went forward , unseen, unloaded his rifle and put it together with the ammo on the 2 nd bench and then withdrew to my observation point where he couldn't see me. On returning to the shooting bench he stood for the longest time and looked at the row of rounds stacked next to his rifle on the other bench .
Eventually he came to his senses grabbed his gear and hurried off in his truck.
Never leave your weapon untended unless you are at a recognized and supervised rifle range .

Being in the army, it was drilled into my skull to always have my rifle within arm's reach so no worries.

I'm just worried that the RCMP would come if I shot on Crown land. If they did, I'd be more then happy to comply with any request they may have but I'm just looking to not get in trouble. I'd hope that if he/she saw that I was shooting safely he/she would just ask me to leave or something.

Damn good advice!
Also I expand this to when one is alone at the Rifle Range. :)

My two bitz...research the area quite well as many Crown land areas more often then not have quite abit of crossover with other industries, such as Provincial parks, Mining, and Forestry.

Here is a recent post similar to yours:

and here is my copy & paste of the second thread:

"DNR=Department of Natural Resources has public shooting ranges throughout the province:

http://www.gov.ns.ca/natr/hunt/Range_Locns.htm

which are obviously provided by us tax payers & voters, they are open throughout the year with the busiest times being Sept, Oct & Nov as most hunters book an appointment over the phone to sight in their rifles "but" anyone can go with someone who has a valid driver's licence and shoot any firearm except the Magnum rifles and .50 cal BMG. They are open 6 days a week with the exception of Sunday.

The closest one to Dartmouth/Halifax is the one in West Jeddore Rd in West Jeddore about 30 minute drive or 50 KM, you can take your restricted (handguns & rifles) if you of course have an ATT permit to transport it.

So far we have been lucky with the mild winter so I hope to go there often and shoot,I asked them if I could sign a form to waver the policy of two people being present and they refused so I guess I have to wait for friends to see when their available. If any of you want to go shooting maybe we can see if regulations allow more than 2 people if so we will choose a day that's preferably warm and around 12:00 to 2:00 as that's usually the warmest time of day and we can drive out in my vehicle if you would like.

You must bring your own targets.

I am available anytime."

Sure, shooting on crown land is not an issue provided you do it safely. Shooting on a beach is a terrible idea though, since water is never a safe backstop.

Shooting on leased crown land it is courtesy to get permission from the lessee but I don't think it's required. I do a lot of my shooting on crown land in a sand dune type enviro.
