Shooting Peep- Aperture unscrewed

How many fellas here are shooting Peeps with the aperture unscrewed for a bigger more open Ring picture?

What would be the advantage to this? *i really only just came across someone mentioning to do this*
dark woods hunting close range?

big game animals only =bigger target area = less miss


its summer down under, we are facing 4 days in a row of 40C this week its during this time of the year i revisit the lever guns and plinking.. kinda wishing i jumped on the 25-20 last month now

I always unscrew the little target aperture. It's faster and lets more light through.

I always unscrew the "target" aperture. I do this as it allows me to see the sights for those last couple minutes of shooting light. I don't find it overly detrimental to accuracy, as I can still shoot acceptable groups for hunting situations.

I also find it much faster to use without the eye cup for hunting , sometimes l drill it out a bit larger

No meaningful accurracy loss

The difference in group size from a bench rest is about 1/2 inch. Offhand the difference is undetectable. Just look through but totally ignore the rear sight. It may be hard to believe at first but once you prove it to yourself it makes running shots at game seem so much easier and where I do most of my hunting in Muskoka that means most of the opportunities I get and I've taken a pile of game, big and small, in the last 60 years.

I've always removed the screw in aperture . I have a handful in the parts pile somewhere .

Basically turns it into a "ghost ring" aperture.

Some loss of precision but less dark and better field of view.

You can also try getting an IRIS rear sight. These will open/close just like your eye so you can shoot targets, then open it up for hunting. Personally I agree with the gents above, you'd loose some accuracy but in field applications I doubt you'd notice the difference.

Me old eyes prefer a ghost ring aperture these days. I used to unscrew the small aperture for hunting as I most always took my shots inside 100 yds.

I have hunted off and on with receiver sights for over 50 years and always remove the rear insert when I am hunting with them.

I'm one more who hunts without the aperture insert. Works much better in low light. I will sometimes put one in with an extra large hole, but only when the light is good.

I added williams aperture sights to my winchester 30-30. I switched to their twilight aperture with a larger diameter hole. It has a brass ring for greater contrast which is easier to pickup. I found this was helpful for hunting.
