Shooting ranges in Calgary

You'll spin your wheels trying to join the Canmore / Kananaski group. They put up so many hoops to jump that you'll probably give up. It is like a private golf club that doesn't want the common unwashed folks around.

In my experience they wanted everything but a blood test and a letter from my parish priest to join.

Try CSRA, those people encourage new members and treat new comers with kindness and respect. The range is great too.

Savage hit the nail on the head. Within the Homestead facility there is only one group, Rosebud, that limit their membership. If you want a membership, any of the other groups using the facility would be happy to sell you one. Personally I was out at the 900m range twice last week for 5 -6 hours each time and had the range to myself. I love the Homestead facility.

hi gents....hava a question: I know that there is the 900m range at the Homestead facility. Who can use it??? what club should I joint to be able to go to this long range??? can I use it if I get the Rosebud membership???

To my knowledge, membership to these clubs comprises the APRA membership plus the membership price of club you are joining. The APRA provides the lease, maintenance and insurance which is good at all their facilities, but each club basically has say as to who can use their facility and when.

Both Rosebud and the long range have separate entrances / gates with separate locks, so if you want to use Rosebud, buy a membership for that range (Rosebud), and if you want to use the upper long range, buy a membership with the fullbore club. You only have to pay for the APRA portion once.

I know if you are on any of the ranges (excluding at a match), you better have a membership for the club who's targets or frames or silhouette you are shooting at. It costs money to keep these in good shape.

Back when I was sec/treas. of Rosebub, it was $50 APRA and $35 for Rosebud for a single, pretty bloody cheap if you look at the facilities there, covered benches and cover silhouette firing line, club house, his and her's toilets, shotgun area and more.

WOOOO:eek: the membership in the Rosebud is 145CnD a year
as far as know they increased it to 150CnD for single in this year......

The 900m range is shared between Fullbore and the Canadian Service Rifle Association. The CSRA also has the pistol bay.

There are some underlying politics at Homestead. The tensions between different shooting disciplines have poisoned other clubs. Sand Hill Rifle Club in Quebec, for example, experienced a coup d'etat when the pistol shooters (mostly French Canadian) got control of the executive from the rifle shooters (mostly English-speakers) and rewrote the constitution.

I believe the APRA's "trustees" or senior supervising executive realize that one discipline could easily gang up on another and remove their sport from the scene. While I don't know if it is true, the sizes of the respective clubs and their contributions to the overarching governing body may be deliberately balanced. Except 250 members is not enough to cover the demand now for the long range - and doesn't this put rifleshooting's popularity in a strange situation.
