Shooting RB in Marlin 1895 GS

Good day all!

So I'm in the market for a big bore lever to replace my .357 Marlins, and I think I'm set on the Marlin 1895 GS stainless 45-70. Need a good bush\canoe gun with abit more versatility. Trouble is, anything I read on the GS model, even before the buy-out, indicates problems with fit&finish, inaccuracy and function. In these threads, a couple folks will reply saying that their blued models are great and love'um. But few will mention the stainless model, and when someone does, its negative.

So now my question to you gentlemen/ladys who own pre-remington stainless Marlin lever guns is, how do/did you like yours? Any issues that would deter you from recommending one to a fellow shooter? Any advice for picking out a proper built Marlin?

I had 2 JM guide guns in stainless.
Fit, finish & function were all excellent in my opinion.
Accuracy was what I expected out of a short barrel hi recoil rifle- not a tack driver but more than up to the task it was designed for.
Factory triggers are a bit heavy and I never liked the cross bolt safety but both of these issues can be fixed easily.
Why did I sell; The recoil is more than I prefer.
But if recoil isn't an issue for you they are one heck of a big hammer.
 
X2 wish i never sold mine but guns come and go in my safe. Mine was a good shooter for what it is and fit was good as well.

Go get one

Hey, now that's good to hear!

See, I can understand why folks might not care too much for a gun like that that can give a guy a beating. But I also understand that the 45-70 can be loaded for very light, more enjoyable loads. I mean, black powder loads? Perfect for a stainless rifle!
 
I like MArlins and my preference goes toward JMs. Recently, I got to examine and shoot brand new remlin 1895 guide guns. My son bought a regular one and that one was quickly send back to Remington and replaced by them. The fit was so so but the problem was, the barrel was canted and there was no way to properly set a receiver peep sight. The replacement sent back by Remington was OK. Fit was good. No issues with anything other than the pressed checkering was not impressive and the loop on the lever had sharp edges. . No issues with sighting in that one.
My friend purchased a stainless model and... I was really impressed. A quality gun and quality workmanship. Everything on that gun was finished and fitted to perfection. It even rang 150 meter, 8" gong five for five, straight out of the box! If I had spare cash, I'd get one of these myself!
 
Mine is just great! I love shooting it!
I even managed to cash in on a unique opportunity for a replacement buttstock!

I have been shooting 420 grain cast bullets for a while now, and they average around 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" at 100 yards. Plenty good for my shooting and hunting.
 
dt, that is one beauty. As for the OP,
I had the GS before, thought never going to sell it...and got an offer that would have been stupid to refuse.Now i'm running the GBL in 45/70.All my loads are end level 2 / bottom level 3. I had JM's before, my two late GBL's are remlins...w/o any modifications and run just fine. You should be trouble free if you buy 2013 and up or "JM" stamped.

Well Gentlemen, this is very good to hear. My 1894 .357 24" Cowboy shall be hitting the EE shortly with part trades in mine.;)

Yep, another Marlin that knows how to wear her Sunday best. Fantastic rifle there Dthunter.

I intend on finding an older used model as it'll be a bush gun anyway, so no sense in finding something pretty just to worry about nicks & such.

You may as well go for a new one (1895 models) and beat it up yourself. EE is like, "JM" same or over new prices, and remlins at new prices...for the 50 bucks you could save,you better go new.They're good guns,they keep their value.Won't find one for 500...Not in 45/70 anyway.

Ah, but here's something I just thought of. Don't the older rifles have ballard rifling where as the "newer" ones have micro grove? Micro grove being not so good for guys who want to shoot lead.
 
I have a 2000 era JM 1895 GS. I have had no problems with it, fit and finish were great.

I've modded it with a lot of Wild West Gun parts and recommend their one piece Happy Trigger. It is a great mod and improves the trigger pull greatly.

And micro groove works with lead,too...But only up to around 1000fps. or else it will jump the grooves.

Works really well on 405 jacketed @ 2000fps.

Yes, that's true. After reading around today, I come to understand that not only do MG barrels need to shot at low speed with cast, but also that they enjoy slightly oversized bullets.

I also came across something very neat where guys load 45-70 with sabots to shoot lower Cal's at higher speeds. Now that was something that perked my interest. ;)
