Shooting RB in Marlin 1895 GS

Har! Better than no ###, I guess... But that was my experience with 459 lead. How much oversize does it need then? 462?

Since 1990s Marlin went to Ballard rifling in all 1895 models. Micro-grooved barrels were over-sized by design - the groove diameter spec was .4587" thus; .459 was too small, especially if soft led was used. In any case, the proper diameter for cast can be only determined by slugging the barrel and trial and error but that goes for both types of rifling.

I mostly used .460 GC cast bullets in my 45/70 but went up to .462 with plain base bullets. Iv sold the 45/70 and moved onto better things now the 444. I shoot .433 bullets in that.

Different? Yes. More unique? Yes. Better? Not sure but, with cash in hand i wouldn't pass one :)

Obviously you have never owned one ;) or You would have answered Yes to all 3 :)
Sure is a PITA to get brass for though lol Im sure ill move onto another best in the future once Iv had my fun

Correct and possible. Is the .458 Win Mag next for you? Oh boy, I wish I could just shoot just couple of these rounds!

Good day again Gents!

So after all was said and done, I ended up picking a new 1895 GS from Lebaron in Ottawa. Was on sale, so can't complain. Anyway, as I stated in my first post, I wanted the 45-70 for some extra versatility. Among the rounds I'd like to play with, I like to try the multi ball loads people have made in then past (on the net and history) for an "at dusk" pest round, as well as funzies. Now, I slugged my bore and if I did it right, its at .458. I may try passing another slug through and see if I get the same result. So now the question is, what size ball will I need? Surly the .457 RB Hornady makes wouldn't make much of a useful round, being that such a round is already limited in its usefulness. What can you guys suggest?

Also, I just want to list the powders I have here in case someone has loaded with them and might suggest a good load. I have .....

Bullseye 4 lbs

IMR 4227 3 lbs

Hi-skor 700-x 1lb

Titegroup 1/2 lb

FFFG Goes BP 2 1/2 lbs

Thanks much.

Ti

I have used bullseye and 700x with good results In plinking loads. I cant remember the charges and no longer have the data written down so I will not be quick to share but they where similar to loads using unique.
