So I have heard alot of different ideas/opinions on when/how/if you can legally shoot your handguns on your own land for plinking/target etc. Anyone know the actually truth of the matter?

They are called restricted firearms because they are restricted to approved gun ranges only. Things may be different in other places but here in BC, that's just how it is. I wish it was legal to shoot handguns on private land but it just isn't so. Gun range is better than nothing I figure !

That thread has a lot of opinions.
If you want an opinion that matters, have your lawyer contact your local police service, and find out if charges will be laid if you are caught shooting a restricted firearm on your property, in the absence of an approved range.

It would help to know what province people are talking about. My earlier post is specific to Ontario and I HAVE spoken with the CFO about it a couple of times. I am in the process of planning out a private, licensed range (family use only, not a club). However the requirements might make it unfeasible in my case.

Also, before the Ontario CFO will license a private range you also need written permission from your municipality. The municipality will then often canvas the neighbours and put it on the council agenda for a vote.
