Shooting Sporting Clay Tournaments in the US

Very easy to do.

All you need is an approved ATF Form 6-NIA. The application says you need a shoot invitation or hunting license to support the application, but this requirement was waived a few years ago. The form hasn’t been revised yet.

The form and a lot of information is available on www.losttarget.com

Approval usually takes about three weeks, and is valid for one year. Make sure you list all ammo you plan to take as well.

State laws may vary, though. For example, here in Washington you still need a written invitation or a tiresome-bloody-nuisance Alien Firearms License. (Lucky thing for my girlfriend when she wants to play while visiting that 1. I have several rangemasters who'll write letters anytime I ask them to and 2. I'm starting to look into NRA Instructor credentials so I can write such letters myself at-will.) It's abject bullcrap, but until we can get it removed from the books it is the law...

Similar experience entering through Maine. A friend tried to point out the invitation is no longer needed. Bad idea.

ATF no longer requires it for approval, but Homeland still apparently requires it for entry. I have letters from the two major NSCA clubs in Maine, inviting me to all shoots on their calendars. I couldn’t get a response from 20th Skeet and Clays when I attempted to register for the NH State Shoot. I printed my e-mail to them and my completed shoot registration form and they were OK with that.

6N as stated, very easy. I've never had any issue at all crossing at either Watertown or Ogdensburg here in E. Ontario, WRT to being questioned about having a hunting license or invitation. A good backup might be to email the SC venue you wish to shoot at and ask for confirmation the club will be open on day xx and that non-members can shoot. If you have an e-mail response to that on your phone, that might help.

If you were attending an NSCA registered shoot, you could show your registration at the border (again, only needed if questioned).

Lots of great sporting clays clubs in the US, and they're easy to get to with just a little prep. Enjoy!

As suggested above, the Form 6NIA can be found on Losttarget.com. There are lots of tips on how to fill it out there. Make sure you allow six or more weeks for it to come back on your first one. You may, as well, get rejected the first time because you filled out something incorrectly. Make sure you have your approved Form 6 before you attempt to cross the border.

You may need an invitation to a shoot when you cross. Many clubs have a generic letter, with an area to fill in your name and address. Make sure the invitation letter will be valid for the time you will be there.

My experience as well, unloaded and in a case.

Of note is if entering on a ferry you have to hand the guns over to the purser who will pass it on to Customs at Port of Entry. Ammunition must be in a locked plastic box. Or at least this is how Bay Ferries (NS to Maine) interpret the rules.
