I have an old Tradex Husqvarna side by side 2.5 inch 12 gauge.

Is it safe to shoot steel shot out of it?

I don't think either barrel is full choke.

Anyone who has loaded this with steel and modern powder, please chime in with your loads. I am interested in BB loads for goose.

I wouldn't shoot steel out of the older guns for several reasons.
I shoot Nice Shot out of my vintage SXS's.

First you would have to find 2 1/2" steel ammo ,or load data for it if you reload.

2 1/2" steel load data is available from BPI, but the danged gun is made of steel that is too soft IMO to handle that stuff.
Stick with ammo made for the old doubles ( Classic doubles) or hand load Nice shot or ITX.
That is what I do for all my vintage guns, Ii don't even waste the time to mess with steel...
