I read a fair bit on all the stuff a guy can buy that will help accuracy, but am wondering about any and all tricks of the trade a guy can use to help his accuracy free of charge. Anything from breathing and when to pull the trigger etc. The little stuff you guys do at the range that pulls it all together for you. any and all tips are appreciated. Basically I just want to know what seems to work for people so I can go out and give it a try.

Check out the new Magpul video on precision shooting that will be released sometime this month. I think there will be many great tips and tricks from some of the worlds most accomplished tactical shooters.

Move your thumb position to the right, of the centre line of the action, when shooting. Do not wrap it around the stock. The position of the thumb keeps the trigger finger off of the stock, and allows for more consistant trigger pulls without influence on the stock.
It does feel different at first, but once you get used to it, it will be easy to see an improvement.

best tip ever is to shoot lots and use/make a log book to record where you wanted the shots to go,and where they hit,add all the info of the day(rifle and Ammo,Temp, time everything you can )! even if its 22lr just get trigger time, and if you area has more lr shooters get out and shoot with them! take a coarse with a well known shooter

Shooting, like tieing your laces and riding a bike, is controlled by the subconsious, once you have done a lot of it.

So what is your consious mind doing while breakng the shot????

It is supposed to be focused on giving useful instructions to the subconsious, not listening to the guys beside you; wondering about dinner, etc.

The care and feeding of the subconsious is important. First, it cannot process a negative command. If you think "Don't jerk the trigger," this gets processed as "#*&^$%@$^&** jerk the trigger."

Dogs are the same way. If you say "Sorry, I have no more cookies", all Rover hears is "$%&&%^$#$#@%$^&& cookies."

I use a specific chant to keep extranious thoughts out of my mind. I think "Perfect shot in the middle. Perfect shot in the middle. Perfect shot in the middle. Perfect shot in the middle. " Each time I think this, I mentally picture a bullet passing though the dead centre of the bull. The subconsious then takes this command and does all the things to break a perfect shot.

What do uou think a pro golpher is thinking when he putts or drives?

When you practice, you must practice with perfect technique. Otherwise you get good at shooting poorly.

For example, you eye will burn in an image in 6 seconds. Look at the TV or out the window for 10 seconds, then look away and blink your eyes. You will see the image. If you concentrate on a sight picture for more than 6 seconds you lose the ability to clearly see aiming errors. So as you deep breath , wiggle and get ready for the shot, don't stare at the target. Do that last, and quickly.

A shooting coach can teach you good fundementals and a sports psychologist can teach you how to focus you brain.

What do, (this is self applied technique picked up in the net and in articles and books):

Get a nice target/varmint 22 rifle with scope and some quality subsonic ammo and hit the 100 yard line on a quiet day with low wind.

Get into position, calm the mind. Aim for consistent pressure on front rest/bag/bipod, consistent pressure on rear bag, (if used), consistent grip and consistent pressure on how you pull the buttstock into your shoulder. Calm the mind again, get a good sight picture, take in a breath, let it half out and slowly squeeze the trigger so that the shot surprises you. If you can't do this before you start to shake, start over with a new breathe.

Keep in mind, my heartbeat seems to shake my sight picture about 1 inch @ 100 yards, so I am now trying to take shots between heartbeats. Let's say I'm glad my range isn't that busy. ;)

When you start getting regular 10 shot groups around 1 MOA with a 22 @ 100 then you should have built up enough technique to move onto center fire. If you are experienced you could go right to center fire but training costs will be higher.

Wish I was here:

Good advice. I did not heard many guys talking about that.

:agree:

All good tips so far,

One thing I think is necessary is to shoot using wind flags,

This will make you a better shooter.

For the people that use them, start out but getting rid of those silly lead sleds and gun vices, and get a proper rest and bag set up. Then you can work on technique.

Yes Ganderite, you've hit on an important point.
Once the doping/clicking/positioning is all done, and it's now time for the trigger ... seems to me that things go better if one squeezes off with confidence on the first good sight picture one aquires.

Long holds, and second guessing, are not likely to be LR hits for this fella.

I've been spending a bit of time on Snipers Hide. They have a bunch of stickied type reads available. Plus a few different sections where you could spend hours reading.

But don't forget to get out and put into practice what you read.

Went to my club today for a turkey shoot. I had allot higher expectations of my shooting. Didn't do aswell as I expected.

This is all great info! I got out to the range both today and yesterday. I totally notice the reticle image stuck in my vision if i look through the scope to long. I was fighting that by just getting into position and closing my eyes for 30 seconds to a minute while I took deep in and out breaths. Keep the info coming.

Part of it is frequency and timing; shoulder your firearm and shoot it. The more you do it, the better you get, and the more that it feels natural. Another part is breathing with and with out a rest. If you have a rest, time your breathing to your trigger pull. If you don't have a rest, time your breathing to your trigger pull.

finger pad VS joint. This is great stuff. Now I just have to remember that for a whole week till next weekend when I can try it. There are a ton of interesting videos from the snipers hide on youtube I see! Thanks tons for that link.

Learn and practice using the best gear possible. If your rifle+ammo is way more accurate than you are, and you truly *know* this, you will sooner learn what you are doing right and what you are doing wrong.

Find a person who is a skilled shooter, a good teacher, and has a personality/outlook compatible with yours; learn all you can from him

Lots of great advice here. One thing I would add is to practice as you would compete - e.g. if your matches are shot from prone then practice from prone etc.

Listen to top shooters like Ganderite who won the Gold Cross at Bisley and Dan C., who won big in TR in Canada.

Reload the best you can and it's one less thing to worry about.

Regards,

Peter
