Shooting the Lee Enfield No. 4 for Accuracy

Back in the 80's - early 90's I had many conversations with former members of the British NRA - (National Rifle Association), but now living in Canada and they were members of the DCRA - ORA (Dominion of Canada Rifle Association - Ontario Rifle Association) and they found excellent performance using their .303 rifled barrels using .308 bullets at long distance.

These are some of the boys that Ganderite will have known well, although I was never really into formal competition like Ganderite was.

I was shooting No4 MK 1's, both Longbranch and the British No4 1's and 2's at the military ranges in Winona and CFB Borden.

Winona at the time was 800 yards.

I don't recall the exact load, but I was using H4895SC with Nosler .308 - 165 grain Ballistic Tips and they shot extremely well at long distance.

Cases were just neck sized with a .308 expander.

They actually performed well in all barrels, 2 - 5 and the 6 groove.

Around the same time, I used to attend the CMP High Power shoots at Camp Perry in the U.S. and I had many conversation's with the engineers from Sierra. This was when they were in the process of developing their Match King .303 bullets and they were very interested at what we were doing with the Nosler .308 - 165's. I did not compete, but I had many friends from all the different U.S. Armed Services that were there in attendance, both armorers and competitors.

I shot on rifle teams in the army in the 80's, but that was the last of my formal shooting days using the mighty FN-C1.

D@m, I miss shooting those rifles!

I have been shooting and collecting No 4's and No'3s for over 50 years, but not as long as Ganderite.

Ganderite is very modest, but in case you don't know, he is also Dominion of Canada Rifle Association - Hall of Famer.

My T seems to like 4064. My test loads with 174 grain hornady boat tails even, showed some promise.

I’m trying to accumulate some 180 grain pro hunters for testing. CAP_57D5EB44-BB15-4577-B138-BF92D4D9D1A7.jpg

That does not make sense to me. A .308 180 in the 308 barrel and a .311 bullet in the 303 should give similar pressures, assuming similar bullet jumps to the rifling.

Here you go [in the same order as in my original post]:

Good enough for me

I put a no-mod scope mount on my Irish Contract No 4. Scope is a vintage Weaver scope FFP 3.5-10x. I had some old Hornady round nose bullets which were very accurate. Sorry but I don't have those details handy now, if anyone really cares I will be happy to search them out. . I then got some PRIVI 303 brass and came up with this load. No brass prep other than measuring brass to see that it was not too long. This is the first load I tried (got from a trustworthy ,to me ,source). Federal Large Rifle primers,Sierra 174SMK bullet,Vihtavuori N140 powder at 100yards, 5 shots. Good enough for this senior citizen

are the stocks bedded? the 308 Brit is the barrel contour the same as the original No4, and what is the rate of twist?
have you tried other scopes?

Lee Enfields have great accuracy potential. Used to tune them up for the guys.
I had a 6 groove #4 Savage Lee Enfield, iron sights, that got me 100M 1.50 inch groups off the elbows. Won 2 Ontario Comps Grand Aggs with that vintage rifle.
Also one year, won Match 1 CFSAC 200 M Del with a Possible. Back then 1 guy in 300 shooters usually did. Prone off the elbows 200M/220 Yds 5.5 inch dia bull target 35/35 points iron sights. Thats about 2 1/2 MOA Max from the old 0L FNC1 rifle and IVI 147 gr.
