shooting vest

Is there any actual advantage to wearing a vest? Aside from some of them having built in recoil pads?
I wear a cheap belt pouch with two pockets and a zipper bottom for my reloads.

I did the same as you for the past 30 years. I did not like the feel of a vest with a pocketful of shells pulling on my shooting shoulder when I first tried it. Then two years ago I decided to try a vest again and bought one that fit properly and I have to say I really like it for the most part except on hot days. I find even though it's mostly mesh that it can get a bit warm on the line in the hot sun for more than a round or two in a continuous situation like a registered shoot. I haven't used my belt pouch since buying it though so I guess it must be working out or I'd have switched. I do like the extra padding at the shoulder too.

I have worn vests since i started shooting in the mid 60's, made by 10-X.
Once mine got too small for me, and my father's old vests started wearing out, I bought a vest from Cabellas, which works well.
I hand load so it's nice to have the big pouch inn the back for empties, and I keep my earplugs and gloves in the pockets so they are always there.
My son uses a belt pouch when he shoots.

I have 2 Beretta Silver Pigeon vests, one in L and one in XL and a divided belt pouch(currently one from Cabelas). The logic is weather, all summer I can wear the L, in the spring and fall when I wear a light jacket the XL fits like a glove, however once winter sets in here, I'm relegated to the pouch due to a heavy winter jacket. I prefer a vest when it's feasible.
