Hi,

Anyone have any recommendations for a good shooting vest for clays? I was looking into a belt pouch but was told a vest would be better with the leather/textured shoulder pad adding that it helps with a smoother consistent mount. There's not many in the lgs here so I'll probably end up shopping online for them.

Let me know what you guys think.

Cheers

I like a belt pouch and an undershirt with the "custom" pad in it. By "custom" I mean you form it at home, but it's shaped to your shoulder and your shotgun.

Mines an Evoshield.

Just my preference.

Both Beretta and Browning make them, however I would recommend trying on before buying. Too loose and the gun snags/hangs up when you mount, too tight and it restricts your swing. I have a Beretta Silver Pigeon vest I wear during the warmer months I like, once jacket season is upon us it gets left home in favour of a double shell pouch.

It all boils down to how much do you want to spend. They all seem to do the job
I still have some Filson, bob allen, browning etc here but the joke is I use a much cheaper one from cabelas 9 times out of 10
No idea who makes them but as martime storm says it fits me perfect which is hard to find normally in a lefthand 3x
Cheers

Like shotguns what matters is fit. Beretta, Browning, Bob Allen and Cabelas are the more common brands but they don't all fit alike. What fits me best is a Browning with a Reactar pad but may not work for you.

If you are trying one in a gun store don't be shy about asking to borrow a gun from the rack for a few minutes to try a couple of mounts. I've never had anyone turn down that request yet.

With on-line dealers make sure the on-line dealer has a good return policy and try and avoid cross border shopping to prevent being screwed on the exchange rate if you require a return.

I like Browning as they fit me well, and I purchase mine at great prices. I have the leather/cloth shooting clays version for cooler days, and the mesh/cotton vest for hot weather. Wholesale Sports had the mesh vests on for under $40 before Christmas.

I tried a shooting vest back when I first started shooting over 30 years ago and did not like the feel one bit. I shot all my life without one until this past season. I ordered a sporting clays vest made by Wild Hare. I liked it so much I ordered another in a different colour just to have a second for down the road.

The local gunstores don't carry much of a selection for vests, luckily I heard basspro is opening up a location in BC this year.

Thanks for all the advice.

You had better hope the Bass Pro opening near you has a better selection than the one near me.

Ive tried quite a few vests ranging from $80-$400. To this day my 2 favorites have been around $100 from Cabelas. Just had to get a new one because about 25,000 rounds wore out my first one

I have to say its expensive, but a custom vest is worlds above a cheapy. Getting it to fit right there is ample room to move and the weight of the shells is on your hips not your shoulders.

I have 2 pieces of fitted clothing, my shooting vest and my shooting jacket. I am very happy with both.

Where did you get them? Ive seen a few and werent that impressed

My jacket came from John Storm Shooting Apperel. I think it ran about $400 including the liner.

My vest came from Chuck Dietl in California, and cost about $200.

I used to use a cheap vest and there is absolutely no comparison, I have not tried the more expensive Browning and Berreta vests, but if you dont fit the standard body type a custom is the way to go.

Chuck has a good article on this, granted he is trying to sell you on a custom vest, but my experience is that what he says is factual. http://plessingersportswear.weebly.com/why-buy-chucks-vest.html

Beretta / Perazzi vests are eurofit. If you are a XL then get an ###L... and so on ....

if you are getting jackets.. then one up is how it works... so if you are an XL.. then an jacket is XXL
