Shooting with a MDT chassis

Good evening,

I decided a while ago to switch my tikka varmint stock for a MDT LSS chassis. I wanted to improve my shooting by getting a good shooting position (cheek weld, LOP, height, etc).

There is one thing I can't figure out:
the buttstock that adjusts on the AR type «tube» is not «tight». It is always moving. I feel like getting a good position is hard because of this. probably worse, I probably never get exactly at the same position...

is there other buttstocks that would install on this type of tube that would solve my problem?
do I need to change the way it attaches to the chassis?
Should I go back to standard stock and just add a cheekpiece (aftermarket)?

anyone ever went that road?

Best thing to do is contact MDT customer service and talk to them about your issue.

They will look after you and sort the issue out.
 
So the butt stock (that is designed to telescope) is loose on the buffer tube/receiver extension that you screwed into the back of the LSS? If that's correct, it depends on what kind of butt stock you have. Something like a Magpul MOE is always a bit loose but other stocks have a means of getting rid of the "slop" such as a Magpul CTR.
 
Buffer tubes and buttstocks come in two diameters, commercial and mil spec. If you put a milspec buttstock on a commercial tube, it will be loose (a commercial buttstock won’t fit on a milspec buffer tube). If they’re mismatched, you need to replace on of the components with the ‘other’ spec to get the proper fit.

I find I need to add a strip of tape inside the buttstock to get a really tight lock up with *no* wiggle. I use this stuff: ht tp://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=32182&cat=,43466&ap=1

I found I needed to add a cheek riser on my magpul ctr buttstock to get a good cheek weld. I used this one ht tps://www.magpul.com/products/ctr-moe-075-cheek-riser?ProductColor=VO343 ! It did the trick for me. Your mileage may vary.

On my mdt lss setup the combo of a milspec tube with a magpul ctr milspec buttstock with a magpul 0.75” cheek riser and a strip of tape inside the buttstock tube to cinch it up makes a rock solid setup.

Can't speak for the OP but my Remington 700 going into my ESS was a huge improvement and even my Howa 1500 in my Oryx has been amazing! Plus they have a 30-day customer satisfaction guarantee so it's risk-free!


The Magpul CTR should have a friction lock on it, the stock is meant to have a bit of play since it's a quick adjust stock. For your LSS there are lots of great options if you want to update the stock!
 
I have not seen nothing so far..

The rifle is new. New caliber, new scope, new setup and I have a really hard time having it to shoot decently. It’s a tikka varmint in 243 win. The twist rate does not allow to shoot heavy bullets but I want to have this baby shoot around .5 moa to 3-4-500yds.

I doubted a lot about my reloading skills but even commercial rounds are not better. I re-tightened everything (stock, rail, rings, etc)
My position on the butt stock was my last concern. Was not perfect so I wanted to upgrade the ergonomics. (I tried nylon cheek pieces, but I was then too high...). I looked at B&c stocks but I rather found a used MDT LSS for a fair price so I went that road.

Now I am kind of deceived by the wiggling... but I understand they are meant to slide and be used as a first purpose on AR platform...

I would love the type of butt stock that cost 500$, but you know...

Yes the castle nut is tight. I also have an adjustable cheek riser. (Not à Quick adjustable, it still adjustable)

I’ll try a couple rows of tape on the tube.

Maybe I also have been unlucky and I got the last rifle made at the factory just before the summer vacations..!!!

Maybe your problem is the expectation. Tikka makes a fine rifle but to expect 0.5moa out to 500yds, from a $1000 rifle seems a little optimistic to me.

What sort of groups did it shoot before the chassis? What sort of groups does it shoot after?
 
i have the skeleton stock on my lss xl get 2 and its solid as ####. you can get adapter and switch to skeleton, or even get the folding device
 
For what it’s worth my tikka in the varmint stock shoots really nice groups torqued at 40 inch lbs. Have you ever shot half min at those ranges with another rifle before? Not saying your a bad shot but could it be the driver?

Thanks great to know - currently have a build going on my Tikka T3x action (Krieger Barrel) and a MDT chassis Gen2. I am hoping for outstanding accuracy if I do my part.
 
Like someone else said, sounds like you have a Commercial Tube with a Military Spec Stock = Will be loose! Get the Mil spec tube.
 
You're dealing with a precision rifle, not an AR15. Unless you really need the adjustable stock feature, you're better off with a fixed stock. A Magpul PRS stock will be fixed with an adjustable for length butt pad. Even a stock A2 fixed butt stock will be better than what you have now.

Other way around.
Either way you can measure top find out for sure. There are a few cost effective stocks out there that will snug up like the Magpul CTR mentioned. You can also go with a rifle length stock or the MDT stocks, Luth AR stock....theres a bunc h.c of options.
Just measure to see where you are at.

I have a commercial tube. There is too much clearance in my opinion but not like if I had a commercial stock on a mil spec tube.

My tikka 30-06 in laminated /stainless with a Bushnell 3200 is shooting nice groups (.75 - 1.0 MOA).
My tikka varmint 300WSM with a Redfield 6-18x is shooting similar groups (5/8 to 3/4 MOA).

I am not the best shooter but I guess I’m ok to expect .5 to .75 from a decent rifle.

I think I’ll get a Magpul PRS and move on. I need adjustment for height, but I don’t need the full telescopic stuff.

My Stealth with the telescopic stock shoots just fine. Its a 1/2" rifle, I'm on the edge of being a 1/2" shooter. ( different stock than yours ) I am going with a MDT carbine when the next sale pops up. Mine has a slight wiggle but it does not cause problems there, I want one that rides the rear bag better.
For myself, It took some time to learn how my chassis wanted to be shot. I get my hand way up high, no side pressure on either side of the grip, fingers off the grip with light loading of the bipod, and light cheek weld pressure. I found that the leverage of the grip can wreck havoc sometimes. Try experimenting with different grip techniques.
