I am thinking of putting a tang peep sight on my marlin 1893. It has a straight grip stock. The problem I find with tang mounted sights is that they are right in the crevace of my hand at the base of my thumb when I grip the stock. Usually the recoil brings it into my hand slightly, enough that I think about it a bit when firing. Does anyone else ever find this? Is there a better way to hold the gun to avoid this? With my 1893 the tang sight is the only option for a peep sight (I don't want to drill and tap the receiver)

The cowboy guys simply don't put their thumb over top. But with the greater recoil of a .30-30 I suppose you want to get SOME added support. What about extending the thumb along the top but over to the side so it rests against the side of the base for the sight? I've seen quite a few folks that shoot even higher power rounds with that method.
Once you get used to not putting your thumb in front of your nose it becomes second nature. I've never noticed any lack of control from not putting the thumb over the top, but I have noticed it makes for faster cycling of the action.
