Shooting with astigmatism

lowering the brightness on the dot is the biggest help. shooting outside with natural light reduces the distortion of the dot, if you sit in your living room looking through the dot it can look horrible with astigmatism but as soon as you go out into the sun it gets better. i have also heard blue blocker sunglasses help but i have never tried that one.

or you could switch to a prismatic optic like an acog, some people find that is the best solution depending how bad your astigmatism is

So far I feel that the ‘blurriness’ subsides in the bright sun. I’ve got a 507c on a versa max tactical and dual illuminated RMR and I feel like the holosun shows clearer in the daylight. My spitfire on my poor AR never improved for me in daylight.

Yep, you should try green if red gives you trouble. My astigmatism is severe, requiring corrective lenses most of my life. Along the way I learned about chromatic aberration, which everyone has to some degree. Mine favours the red but yours may favour the blue end of the spectrum.

LOL so I just did some googling and someone else suggested taking a picture of your reticle on your phone to determine if your dot is defective or your eyes are. So all this time I thought I was shooting a triangle rmr and it’s actually a large dot, probably 12 moa..... I just thought my eyes were washing out the left side of the triangle. bought it used and it’s always worked fine, but ya. Goes to show you really don’t know but whatever, it works for me...

I have astigmatism too, although it's fairly mild. Some red dots appear worse than others, at least in my experience. I find that Holosun and Trijicon red dots appear less 'smeared' probably because they're both slightly magnified (ie not a true 1x). Your mileage may vary though.

You could also find a shooting eyewear system that allows you to mount prescription lenses into the frame. I think Oakley, ESS and Revision all have that ability (I use Revision Sawfly and Stingerhawk frames), and having prescription inserts made up by your optometrist is actually fairly cheap.

I’m going to go to the optometrist and get my eyes checked. I don’t generally have a problem with my astigmatism unless it comes to the red dots, and even then I didn’t think I had a problem... but turns out I do. Some shooting glasses will probably be my solution

I’ve recently found that astigmatisms affect how you see red dots. I’ve got a holosun on my tavor with magnifier and the magnifier definitely reduces the ‘smear’ of the sight but I still notice it. I have a dual illuminated rmr on a glock and I can’t see half the triangle. I can see the top tip, so not a huge deal but does anybody have experience with brands to reduce the effect of astigmatism?

I would have suggested a RMR dual illuminated green triangle or large green dot, because I see those the best out of all my dot sights, and I own Eotech (the worst), Aimpoint T2, Trijicon MRO, Trijicon SRO, and 5 different RMR's

I find I see Green the best, and the dual illuminated have no star burst effect to me

The green triangle does show a lot better with tons of ambient light obviously, but the left corner of the triangle gets cut off for me... Weird. I thought we were looking at a circle when i took a photo of the reticle, but more than one person has told me they see a triangle too. LOL at least i can still hit stuff, although not well.

If you have trouble with the points of the triangle, maybe have a look at the RM05G 9moa green circle I have one also, and the dot is a little larger then the center area of the triangle. I use it on a pistol but could be used on a rifle it will just cover a lot of the target at some ranges

I have a couple holosun optics on some short range iron and they honestly seem to show better in the sunlight than the RMR. I'm going to see if i can go hold one in my hand at the store and try a green RMR dot.
