Sorry guys I'm a newbie who is getting a little confused. I'm shopping for a new .22 semi-auto really would like to stay away from all the tactical stuff, yes will be taking it to the range and also hunting with it (rabbit, etc). I was at the Fishing world today and the guy was showing me different .22 Browning SA-22, Remington 597, Savage Model 64. I aimed each one of them, each felt a little different but my question is really what is it that I'm looking for. When I do a review search online there are always mixed reviews, even on here. The Remington 597 seem to be popular but has a big neg(-) following, you get a good one out of the box or you don't, if you don't can you return a gun??? (it jams all time, whatever else happens to them), its not your problem. So whats the deal I understand I have to find one that feels natural but really is the fact that I'm looking for a semi-auto that makes it a problem pron issue with gun should I be looking at a bolt action??
Its sucks to think of spending +$200 give or take on a problem pron gun that now you have to spend more cash moding it just to get it to work.

Which .22 to get

I don't own a .22 semi, but if I was going to get one, I think I'd go with the Ruger 1022. It's reliable, quite accurate out of the box, and you can get tons of aftermarket accessories so you can customize it any way you want. they also start at a very reasonable price.
 
+1 on the Ruger 10/22

I am is the same spot as you, and most people I talk to about it are pointing me toward the 10/22. These are experienced shooters. The 10/22 keeps coming up again and again...
 
I own both a Remington 597 (my first semi .22) and a Ruger 10/22.

I haven't shot the 597 in years - it's a piece of sh*t.

Save yourself the hassle and get a 10/22 the first time.

I have a 597. It was a total piece of #### before I installed the Volquartsen target hammer and extractor in. Now it is great.

But I wish I had bought a 10/22. Way more upgradable.
 
I got a Savage 64FSS and a friend purchased the Savage 64F, I think its a great gun never had any jamming issues with it at all. Just another option if you dont want the 10/22.
 
Funny we just had a kids shoot at the range, and the 10/22's were jamomatics...the 597 shot about 500rds through her and didnt jam once...I thought it was weird also..

Find something that fits you. Semi's are fun, but I prefer a manual action (lever, pump, bolt). They dont jam either :)
