Shopping for a Progressive Press: Need advices

Seabast congrats. Best move you could have made. I have two 550's now. I load for several pistol calibers and two or three rifle calibers. If you have not already get the stand for the press, consider getting one. You are now on a journey you will enjoy all your life. If you have not done so already join the Cast Bullet Forum and the newer The Art and Science of Bullet Casting.

Thank you Bob!

I haven't got the stand yet but I'll look into it.

That's a new one to me: https://www.artfulbullet.com/index.php, thanks for sharing.

Cheers

If you do get a stand have a look at the Inline Fabrication one for the 550C. Thicker and I believe stiffer than the Dillon version. I use their their Quick Change mount and change various presses on the same stand.

Good choice on D550.
If/when you decide to load more calibers, joferusa_com on eBay is a good source for aftermarket toolheads.
An extra powder measure is nice to have, but all you really need is a dedicated powder die for each toolhead/caliber.
For medium throughput reloading, DAA Mini Bulletfeeder is another nice to have. I heard quality control on their powder funnels has been less than stellar lately, and this third party funnel works better: w ww.photoescapeinc.com/products/powder-funnel.html

Good to have a Dillon with the shell plates and all for the ammo you want to make a lot of, but keep the Lee for working up loads or making small batches.

The Dillion 550 is in my opinion one of the best progressive presses for the money, I've used the 550 to process loads of 6.5 and 308 brass as well as 9mm and 45ACP. Also good for loading lots of ammo in a short amount of time for a PRS matches. For benchrest ammo I'm now using the Redding T7 Turret press. Here's my setup.

Reloading cast Bullets means possible problems with the lubricating Wachs.
Myself for the 3-500 batches, I use a RCBS Rockchucker with a Piggyback attachment which I love and had for many years. It works great on Jacketed Bullets but Cast Bullets are still a challenge I am working on.

Just my 5 Cents - Cheers

Brassman66 what are lubricating wachs? I have loaded about 400,000 rds at least on my old 550B,,most of which have been lead. The bottom arms were replaced by Dillon at about 300,000.

For pistol, hard to beat a Dillon Square Deal B. I also have a Horady LnL AP, which is a little more versatile as i can load rifle and pistol.

That said, the SDB is much less finicky... and easier to keep running.

Note, ALL progressives are finicky and need constant tweaking/checking. Comes down to which one is the least, and learning the quirks and how to solve them.

*Edit. See you picked up a 550C. Another great choice.

Hey Bob,
Lubricating Wachs (in enlish- Wax - sorry my German got in the way) I call what Lyman calls Bullet Lube used exclusively on cast Bullets.
While in my opinion I shoot a fair amount, no Dillon required for a little Guy like me.

Thanks
Karl

Hi Karl gotcha. No worries. I have loaded thousands of rounds of lubed bullets with my Dillon 550 no issues. I am not sure waxed lead bullets, particularly if it was soft wax would do well in a bullet feeder though. Don't use a bullet feeder on either of my 550's.
