hey there CGN family. Im in the market for a 30-06 rifle for hunting big game (deer, bear, maybe moose?). Trying to keep in under $1000 which is probabaly the biggest obstacle. Been looking at a savage axis II, a ruger american or american predator. Seems like options are limited and a lot of guns are out of stock, but im in no rush. Just throwing it out there to the CGN family, would aprpeciate any feedback or opinions on the best quality options in my $ range.

If you’re open to a lightly used rifle, you can get excellent rifles with great discounts. A lot of lightly used rifles in excellent condition out there. In your price point, you could buy quite a nice rifle. I am assuming your $1000 is just the rifle and not including optics?

^^^ that is the way I would go!! You can get a Ruger M77mkII for around $700-800 and it would be 100 times better than the 3 rifles you mention!!

I suggest going to a store, and finding a rifle size that fits you like a glove. Once you do find one measure or look up it's Length of pull. Once you have that number you can look for other rifles that have similar length of pulls removing some of the pitfalls of not having held them first to know if they fit.

Never discount a decent used Rem 700 either. BDL, Mtn SS etc always seem to avail on the EE for a decent price ($700-$1000) depending on condition and round count. Throw in a huge aftermarket following and it's hard not take a serious look at them.

Honest question because I actually don't know the answer. With the Rem 700 Missfire problems, when buying old or used Rem 700 do I need to have them checked out? Sent in for warranty? Main reason I don't own one is I don't wish to buy a rifle that just goes off when using the safety. Is this still an issue one has to worry about?

I have had good luck buying guns from Intersurplus, and they have a nice hunting rifles with scope mounted for under 500 dollars, that is much better than your new guns on your list.Anything with a m98 action, is going to shoot better than a new gun.The most expensive guns come with that action, as it is the best and strongest available.

Most guns shops will let you hold the rifle when you visit in person. Some private sellers will let you fire it if you are close enough to visit in person.

Any of those choices will be fine for a hunting rifle . One of the new CGN vendors has a new Savage Axis 30-06 with a scope combo for 450 bucks , and it is showing as in stock . It is tough to go wrong at that price for a new rifle , and Savages are pretty well known for good accuracy .

Not much to add here that isn't already said but I'll try anyway. Having owned many savage rifles and a couple Americans I can tell you a used Vanguard, M70, M700, Howa 1500, Ruger M77 are all much better options. You can even get a new Howa 1500 or CZ 557 for around the price of a ruger predator.
