I am in search of a new toy (pistol) and I am looking for feedback. At this point I am still very open in my decision.

Here are my thoughts/questions so far;

Brand;
Berretta - Px4 Storm
GLOCK 22
Heckler & Koch P2000
Kimber Eclipse or Tac
Para Ord ???
SIG P226
S&W SW40VE or M&P .40
STEYR PISTOLE M-A1
Taurus
And probably many others

Caliber? 40 S&W most likely or 45 ACP

Barrel length? 4-5"

Decocker or not?

Coolness factor, yes, this is a factor to me. I really like a more modern looking models which leans toward non metal frame pistols but I haven't made that a firm point yet. Maybe I'll need one of each :)

Trigger pull is a whole other section to talk about. I am very pick around trigger feel and will throw out a lot of other considerations to have a nice smooth, crisp and consistent pull.

I do have some interest in IPSC shooting and would like to try it out so please consider its requirements when recommending models.

I appreciate any and all feed back,
Thanks

Can't go wrong with a P226. Its a great shooter in .40 (or 9mm). I like the decocker feature, and it fits my hands well. Also its rugged and not going to fail you. IMHO

P226 is a great gun but it may be a bit pricey for you. Currently the best value out there is I believe the M&P40. There are numerous bannered sponsors on here that sell. After that, I would take a seriously look at the Glock 22. Thats my .02, but I foresee the opinion dam bursting:runaway: and a flood of other opinions coming forth..Hold on..;)
dB:)
(if Arms East wasnt sold out of the CZ40P, thats the one I would choose over others)

If you are thinking of IPSC, give these a look. They don't get any cooler and handle better to me than any other format I've shot.

A PARA LDA in 45 would be an interesting gun to own...

If money is not an object get a Kimber, HK Mark 23. If you desperately want .45 consider the Glock 21SF.

Love my Para

Picked myself up a Para S16-40 Ltd back in August. So far so good, put about 1500 rounds through it now and find it shoots really accurate. It does need a trigger job, as its not as smooth as others I have fired. Overall, it fits my hands well and have had zero issues with it other than installing a new fiber optic rod which came loose around the 1100 round mark. (from what I read on this forum that is normal....five min fix with a lighter and scissors).

I'm sure Stormbringer will reply to this thread, and he will push you to a Tangfolio Custom Limited...and for good reasons. I have fired his gun during my course training, and it is damn nice indeed. Very nice trigger feel to it, and overall...its just a nice gun. It is a 40S&W, so is my Para.

Mags are something less to be desired in my Para. One of them does not drop out all the time by itself, I just haven't spent the time to "adjust" things yet. It does not come with a magwell unless you get the Todd Jarett special. Tangfolio comes with a metal magwell...it looks pretty.

Good luck, hope this helps. Again, I have been very happy with my purchase...picked it up for $1500 new.

IF you decide on the S/W M&P, you might want to read up a little on the quality of the mags.

I did go out and buy one in 9mm, and i plan on getting into IPSC shooting soon, but Stormbringer mentioned to me while he was showing me around EESA that the original mags for the M&P had a problem (cant remember specifics) which made him not a fan of that system. The gun is great and it may be that the issue Stormy told me about has been repaired ...

Just a though :) Maybe some other members on here know the problem I'm refering to?

I lot of it has to do with personal taste. I have the USP, Glock, 226, 686, and soon a nice Kimber custom target. I find that my tastes have changed a bit over time but there are a few must haves and a quality 1911 is the must have. I would advise you to shoot/fondle as many different platforms as you can. As for decockers and the like you will probably find that it will depend on experience and application to decide on features. I learned to shoot on my USP and the C-7 rifle so it gave me experience with DA and 2 stage triggers and the concept of proper trigger control. Your tastes will probably change so get what you like because there is always the EE forum and plenty of opportunity to trade or sell it.

According to the MP-pistol forums, the mag problems are still there, S&W haven't really solve it yet. Some of them will fell out while shooting and some won't let the slide lock after last shot. But Smith-Wesson will replace them for free.

The problem I was concerned with comes from an IPSC perspective.

The mags are based on the Walther P99 mags.

The base plates DETONATE when dropped on Concrete floors..

My son went through 27 base pads on his 9 mags.

True they were all replaced for free.......but it is a tad annoying to have a fully loade mag explode on your belt in the middle of a stage spewing rounds all over the place....

When the M&P was first announced I almost bought one for him to replace his P99. However one of the first posts I saw showed a mag failure exactly like the P99. I understand however that Full cap mags do not have that problem.

Soo..

*DPA...........good choice

Plinking........ good choice.

IPSC?? well only if they fix the mag issue.

The original mags had Black followers, the redesigned mags have grey followers - any in a dealers possesion at this time should be grey, while I'm at it there have been (as there always are) revisions to the pistol. To find out what revision you are looking at; either take the slide off yourself, or ask the dealer to, and look inside the dust cover. You'll find a letter moulded into the plastic. Pistols from Revision N onward have been shown to be free of the early production gremlins. The other problem affecting early production M&P's was that the mag latch would release on a fully loaded magazine - this is no longer an issue, and anyone who had an early gun received a new latch from Smith simply by asking (it's a user installable part). Finally I know there was at least one sponsor dealer who was working on trying to get some "LE only (metal) Magazines". Haven't heard if they've become available yet.

As with many things, MP forum lists virtually every failure conceivable - as I have never had any problems with a pistol except for an extractor that needed a tweak(and there have been many, many pistols through my hands) I cannot comment.

I should have clarified what I want to use it for a bit more. For now I am looking for something that could be used at either IDPA/IPSC or other similar events and not have to modified (much) it to be able to compete (stock class). Those IPSC Open class guys are just not where I want to head to, no offence, to them as I am a bit jealous. I see IDPA requirements are not too strict on minor changes but is IPSC - Production division? i.e. can polishing parts be done or modifiing the trigger? Also for IPSC I would need to buy a 40S&W to make major class? is it worth it or should I just get a 9mm first? Maybe I missed something on the minor/major class, and I don't plan on reloading right away.

I have spent a lot of time lately doing more fine tuning of my choice and I think I am narrowed down to;
Springfield XD
CZ SP-01 or the shadow or the Tactical version with a 5.4" bar instead of 4.7"
Glock 17 or 22
S&W M&P

I think I will wait to spend a bigger chunk of money on a gun when I figure out the sport I want to be in. I really like the Kimber, Tanfoglio and Para's.

Thanks for all the feedback so far,
Scott
