Short 12 gauge suggestion

NO, NO, NO!

You don't want a full choke on your protection gun. If you do purchase a choke that extends past the muzzle, make sure its one with no constriction, that is a cylinder or improved cylinder choke. No full chokes!

im not familiar with the choke terms sorry.. but in my head :D a full choke was a ZERO choke (a fully OPEN choke).. just a piece of metal protecting the muzzle without choking anythang :)

Just throwing idea up in the air.. if you get a Remmington 870 express.. replace the barrel. (its no Ruger 10/22.. maybe gunsmith required, i have no clue.. but as long as its doable and legal in canada)
images

48 and a half inch Overall length..
28 inch barrel..
not sure where the pump stop ( i guesstimate around half the barrel length )

That would give me a short remington.. around maybe 36 inch.. still too long.. DA still win! But if its user replaceble.. i could re-convert my shorty into a full length regular 870..

Is there something wrong in those info ?

The shortest Mossberg easily available is a 18.5in gun which is not nearly as compact as the 12.5in DA. Good gun and a better go arguably if you are going the full size route.

What is this Mossberg model exactly ? and once again, used to small 10/22 ruger.. can i replace the barrel with a shorter one and beat the 31" inch that Dominion Arms Grizzly 12.5 overall length of 31" ?

on the mossberg webpage.. i see a few Mossberg 500 special purpose shotgun that is very close.. 28 3/4 inches.. 6 shots.. is there someone who would advise against "special purpose" model ?

Typically 14" barrels match the tube length of an 870 magazine. After market barrels are readily available in a variety of lengths for both 870s and 500 Mossbergs.

IMHO, an obsession with the shortest gun length possible at the cost of balance, handling, and shootability isn't a reasonable tradeoff. The gun needs to be quick and handy, but a short OAL is only part of the equation. Balance is important otherwise the gun doesn't point naturally and is actually slower for the first shot, and for obvious reasons recoil control is important for a new shooter, What you appear to be speccing out is a niche product, for a seasoned shooter, to be used in a very specific environment. More importantly is a gun about a meter long (which is still quite short) that is about 6-7 pounds in weight, that points well, that fits you with a good quality recoil pad installed, and is equipped with sights you can see, be it a bead or rifle sights. If rifle sights, a ghost ring and post have much to offer, if a bead, ensure that it is mounted on a pedestal which matches the height of the receiver to prevent you from over shooting your target.

so i should stop trying to mod a longer popular brand and just buy a already made shorty that is already created to YingYang the balance, handling, and shootability of the 12ga.

I'll get another regular one at a later time and buy a DA Grizzly for this specific job!

Once again, thank you very much for your input! Very appreciated

Now :) lets see who sells DA Grizzly in the sponsors :)

It only takes a few seconds to change the barrel and the Wingmasters, especially the older one's are higher quality with a smoother action then the Chinese made stuff. I believe Dominion Arms Grizzly's are made by Norinco.

I have a relative who is a former Brinks guard. Pistol griped shotguns are to be avoided. You want a proper shotgun butt in the case you only had one are available to shoot (due to injury or any other reason)... You could prop the shotgun butt against a tree or wall, and still accurately fire.

For critical home defense, 8 shot 12 gauge would work well, as it does not go through walls and not a lot of accuracy required... However if an intruder had a family member at risk, accuracy of a hand gun is preferred.

As for bear protection... I'd suggest not to carry an 18" shotgun. As others mentioned, you really have no accuracy with slugs beyond 20 yards in such a short shotgun barrel (no rifling).

I would suggest a 45-70, something like the Marlin Model 1895G 45-70 Guide Gun Lever Rifle, 18" Blued, Walnut Stk... The rifle is very compact, and fires what is essentially a very long .45 ACP bullet which packs a tonne of power. Bear defense requires protection beyond 50 yards. A 45-70 is accurate, and will stop a bear.

LOL, be sure to practice at the range with the 4570, they pack one heck of a kick. ;)

Why are these posts even in the "Hunting and Sporting" Shotgun section?

because the shotgun will be used to hunt frogs and annihilate them to make soup

also, i dont plan on hunting throwing rocks by hand.. why not a shotgun ?

with a short shotgun you can hunt.. no matter if a longer barrel is better.. its doable.. mostly if you are backpacking 30 miles, you will be happy to have a small barrel
or if you prefer.. smoke some weed and throw dragon breath shell in tha air if that float your boat!

also.. go complain to a moderator and move the damn post.. i dont give a f

Brutus, don't concern yourself so much with the inebriated but well intentioned participants, instead let's here your view to make a positive contribution to the discussion.

YourAreInOilCountry, if I can shoot 20 pop cans out of 20 shots with a Winchester 1300 rifled at 50 yards with slugs, I would say accuracy is not a problem. I've also shot a few deer at 200 yards with the same shotgun with many witnesses. If at any time you think the 3" mag slugs are easy on the shoulder, please think again. Shotgun slugs are not in any way inaccurate with today's firearms. Your supposition of inaccuracy is mute at 20 yards.
