figure this is the best place to ask even though this will not be for a pistol in the end... I Are there pistols out there that use very short magazines with the same dimensions (except length obviously) as 1911? 5 round capacity?

I'm looking for a mag that will protrude less out of this.

Colt officers magazines are about as short as you get, they are 6 rds. You won't get any shorter simply because of the frame

I was hoping that because of the 1911's popularity someone might have made a model with a very short grip and a correspondingly short magazine... ah well :(

The bottom of the 1911 mag is welded shut. If you've got the metal skill to make a .45 ACP carbine, you can neuter a magazine!

Aren’t bolt actions exempt from mag caps under the FA? Or did I miss something?

You converted a .303 into a .45ACP? Cool!

It goes by what mag it uses, so the 1911 _pistol_ mag is still limited to 10 max. If I were to design a mag from scratch it would be unlimited. And no - the conversion is not mine. It comes as a kit from Special Interest Arms.

IT would be quite easy to cut the bottom off a mag at the length/angle you want and solder/weld a plate on the bottom.

It might be easy to cut and weld, but the result would be a mag that cannot be disassembled should I need to clean it.

Are you saying they are normally welded already? All I have are Wilson Combat mags right now - they disassemble. If that's the case, anyone have a 1911 mag with a damaged bottom they want to sell me? ;)

I _can_ get a Detonics mag! Thanks! That's exactly the type of info I was looking for. Will give it a try.

Yes, either TIG weld or braze (silver or bronze); I think you would need a wedge in the bottom though to maintain correct angle for the spring, otherwise it might bind.
