If you happened to have a remington 700 magnum bolt faced short action laying around whats the funnest chambering you would do? 416x2" or 458x2" have my interest but im open to any suggestions

You keep talking about the .458x2", you might aswell do it. Hard to hate a bolt action .45/70.

Something based on a Ruger Compact case or perhaps WSM would be fun. Like a 458 WSM...

Oh, geez... you bugger... I happen to have a Ruger M77 Mark II .300 WSM... SOAB... the .458 WSM is a pretty cool cartridge.

I have a .458x2" project on the go - a Ruger 77 (tang safety) short action. Bolt face opened for the belted case. I think that the biggest difference between a rifle in .458x2" and .45-70 might be that the belted case and bolt action are designed to handle somewhat higher pressures than most .45-70 rifles.
Another option for the OP would be .350RemMag.

Yeah, so... I sourced the dies, reamer and barrel... guess I'm gonna do the .458 WSM. This is not as much of a whim as it might seem, since I have been shopping for a bolt action .458 for some time and have a WTB out for a Ruger M77 Mark II RSM... but a lighter stainless rifle would make an excellent guide carry... never thought I would say these words, but "thanks, Gatehouse."

The worse part of this project is what I am going to sacrifice to get it done... an incredibly sweet Ruger No.1-S .45/70 with 22" C-barrel... arguably the nicest No.1 made... sigh...

Quite a few years ago I had the same idea and ordered a .458-2.1" reamer from Manson's. The idea with the 2.1" length was to use in a .450 Marlin MR that I had. Was a pretty simple process actually with a bit of trimming of the ejection, loading port and shell stop and off to the range with shortened .300RUM brass that I had formed with a set of custom Hornady forming dies. I never had time to fully wring it out as other issues arose but 250gr Barnes @ 2650fps was accurate and mild to shoot. 350gr @ 2330fps and 400gr at 2216fps with 65gr of N133 was starting to hurt from the lever design.

It has always been my intention to build sort of a smaller African Rifle version bolt gun to really see the potential of the short mag. I have a few Rem/Winch short mags and while the Rem do not readily feed as well as the crf Win I'm sure that could be worked out. For me, I'll probably go with the crf.

Sounds like a cool build. Will be a heavy hitter.

If 6.5 caliber is on the table I would go for a 6.5 PRC for sure. But the OP seemed to be looking at larger diameters so the 458WSM makes sense.

Still waiting for some parts for my 6.5 PRC rifle before it comes together, hopefully by hunting season 2021.

I have the .416x2" on a Rem M600. Flatter trajectory than the .458 American, especially with the 300gr Barnes @ 2300fps. The 400gr RN steps out at 1800 with a full load of IMR3031. Making cases is a little laborious but once you have them they seem to last several loadings.

No need to booger up yer No.1. The 45-70 be more than sufficient for most critters, both here & abroad with good boolits at moderate velocities at the closer ranges folks tend to use 'em. I've played with .458x2 conversions years back on Rem 600 builds and one on a Winchester 94 that an old amigo did up. Stout kickers to say the least. The '94 was evil on both ends.:runaway:
