Short barrel .260rem?

My son wants a small, short barrel rifle in .260 rem. and he really likes the Ruger Compact in .260. It seems the .260 is really suited best for longer range shooting in a standard (22-24") barrel. How does this caliber preform in the shorter barrels, the Compact has a 16 1/2" barrel. Im thinkin that for a smaller rifle the Model 7 REM with a 20" barrel in .260 might be more suiteable in this caliber.

The Ruger Compact is by far the most compact with a 12.5" Length of Pull. Mine is a tackdriver, the most accurate rifle I've ever owned. I would not hesitate to buy one, especially for a kid.
 
Barrel length at the ranges he is likely to be shooting at (under 250 yards, I'm just guessing) is going to make no PRACTICAL difference in how effective the cartridge is. Buy the gun that fits him best and go hunting! My younger brother shoots Rem 7 in 260. He can knock down the steel rams at 500 meters no problem with it and has shot deer to past 400.
 
go 260 go, get the boy the gun, he'll love it! We have the slightely longer barrels, but if the young fella wants the Compact, git it for him! He will fill the freezer for sure! Happy shoot'en.
 
Keep in mind that the 6.5x54 was (and is) very effective on soft-skinned game. IIRC the 160gr bullet moved along at a leisurely 2200fps. You would easily match that performance with a short barreled .260 Rem.

I have a Ruger compact in 260 its dam good hunting rifle
I love packing it in the bush most deer killed her are shot from 50 to 100 yard 260 is a sweet to shoot
 
If you use heavy for caliber bullets, you will observe less velocity drop compared to the same load fired from a full length barrel, but as these guys have said, it won't change what the rifle can do. The worst mistake anyone can make is giving a kid a rifle that doesn't fit him, he'll never be able to shoot it well. The .260 produces mild recoil in a light rifle, and has suffucient velocity and bullet mass to be a versatile big game cartridge out to 300 yards. And its a practical cartridge that he never needs to outgrow

Thanx Gents!

Now all Ive got to do is find the young fella a Ruger Compact in .260....searched all over the country...anyone know where I can locate one?
 
I don't think 260Rem in 16" barrel is good idea for young boy. On the shooting range his hearing will be protected, during hunting not so. Use 20" barrel as a minimum and if you are a handloader you might download 260Rem with quality 120gr bullet to 250-3000 Sav level and he will be good to go. Once the lad is 15-16years old or so he can use it full power or whatever the cartridge he might be in "need" then.
