Short barrel ammo

Got my new (to me) Ruger SP101 357 mag with 2" barrel. Any suggestions on a good ammo for this little beast? Speer makes a Gold Dot Short Barrel 357, but can't seem to find any in Canada. Buffalo Bore also makes a Short Barrel 357, but I'm not holding my breath that it is going to show up here anytime soon.

Out of curiosity, isn't that a prohibited firearm ?

That's what I'm thinking, heavy bullet and fast powder. Unfortunately not set up for reloading.
And in reply to x0ra, yes it is prohibited, if you are lucky enough to have 12.6 on your RPAL you can purchase and own them:)

Custom Reloading. I've gone through thousands of round of his stuff without any problems and the prices were very good, at least for his standard reloads. I believe Brad is a site sponsor so you can PM him.
 
Since ballistics are a relatively moot point for paper punching I'm going to assume you're asking about "serious" ammunition for "serious" use. Speer makes a 135gr Gold Dot that's specifically for snubbies but I doubt you'll find any here, perhaps a sponsor could order some. Barring that one of the best loads for a .38 snub was, and still is, the "FBI load" of a 158gr lead HP in a +P. There's lots of this stuff floating around and a WTB ad on the EE should produce some results. Aside from being a very effective load it also tends to be a lot cheaper than the JHP premium stuff!
 
curious as to why you would want specific ammo for a prohib firearm you can't LEGALY shoot anywhere???

I love guys like this. Six posts in and they think they're smarter than the collective wisdom of the entire board.

Educate yourself, hootguy. Prohib handguns can be taken to any approved range.
 
Lots of guys, especially ones newer to shooting are not aware of what or how prohibited (12.6) status works. They're just taught on their RPAL that those guns are prohibited, so don't bother thinking about ever shooting them. They have no experience with them or realize that they can be used and transported just like normal restricted class, if you are fortunate enough to have 12.6 on your licence.
 
sounds like a good reason to get into reloading. maybe know someone with a reloading set up. can bang off a 100 rnds in no time.
