Hi all,

This may be more of a legal/gunsmithing question but I figured I'd start here...

There is little aftermarket support for the Remington 597 and almost nothing in the way of barrels (particularly sort ones) that I'm aware of.

How does one go about acquiring a legal sub-12" barrel for a 597 and still keep it non-restricted? What comprises and defines a "manufactured" barrel as opposed to a modified barrel?

If one were to have a 12" barrel blank chambered, an extractor slot cut, and stamped to identify it as a 597 barrel would that qualify it as a "legal barrel"?

There would still be the issue of mounting the barrel but has the requirement been satisfied that is is a short, manufactured barrel for a 597?

I am fully capable of fabricating the full assembly myself but am not legally a manufacturer... how to make it happen...

I anxiously await your "Go buy a 10/22 and a sort barrel..." responses :D

If you can find a manufactured barrel that short and your OAL is still more than 26" you should be good to go........

That said, buy a 10/22, etc. etc. :D

I measured my 10/22 and I could go to a 7 1/2" barrel and still be just a hair over 26". You would have to call around/surf the net around.... to see if anybody makes a barrel that short for the 597. there are manufactures out there making barrles for the 597.... but will they be short enough I don't know.

Cheers

If you are capable of making one and doing a good job, then you should do it. With a standard barrel blank you should be able to make two 12" ish barrels. You could sell the second one and recoup some of your costs. As long as it is not a cut down factory barrel, you are good to go. Stamp MB 12" 597 22LR or something on it when you are done.

Done and done... and I mean DONE!

I tried calling the CFC to get my cert changed... No go for now. I'll have to call back and speak to a Firearms Tech, I figure I'm likely going to end up with a new FIN for it. Keep your fingers and toes crossed for me...

Nice job, I'm interested in getting on myself. I can't wait till the market starts developing tricked out accessories for the 597s.

Let me know if you ever have a extra for sale.

Thanks,

Jake
