Short barrel O/U or SxS with optic rail?

I’m after a shotgun that strips down into parts small enough to fit into a backpack.

I think a simple over under or side by side would fit that role well.

Does anyone make a 12”-14” barrel 20ga or 12ga O/U or SxS that also has a rail for a red dot?

Stoger and Mossberg make nice options but I’d like shorter barrels than their offerings.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

You might have to get a gunsmith to drill and tap some provisions for the rail. Not many coach guns with such a small 12-14 barrel that come with a rail, from what I have seen.

Have you looked at

Thanks, those were the ones I’ve found thus far too.

Wasn’t sure if what I’m after exists already or, to your point, if I’d need to get a gunsmith involved too.

The Mossberg with 18.5” barrels I believe?

Yes, optics rail and breaks down into 20" sections. Most 12-14" barreled guns still have full length stocks so the stock/receiver section is typically about 20", so you're not gaining any storage space by going shorter than 18.5" barrels but you gain the muzzle energy, (and extra weight). The Mossberg Maverick HS-12 is my favorite do-it-all gun, I've owned several.

If you also wanted, you could get the "rib" of the side x side you choose and have a gunsmith/machinest make you a raised rib that is high/wide enough to accept a red dot or drill and tap for Picatinny rail. Like this.

Excellent point. My pack max length is 20” I’d been focused on the barrel but need to consider the stock too.

Thanks

Not a necro-thread but ...... Came across a little shorty shotgun that just called to me. Mossberg hs-12. Yeah we all heard of them but I always confused it with the Stoeger double defense. Straight up, I loathe the rails on both of these guns. I know some folks get jazzed by the lights, lasers, bipods , coolers, toolboxes and whatever other crap they can bolt on to their guns but I prefer the minimalist approach and have thus never entertained the purchase of one of these potential "swiss army guns" HOWEVER, last weekend I happened upon a dealer that had a used Mossberg HS-12 with no rails, except the one that incorporates a useful sight groove atop the receiver.

This shotgun had my name on it. No extra bolt on crap, no glaring screw holes to betray the presence of past bolt on crap either. This shotgun was simple. Black, matte, ready to work. On top of the beautiful absence of "stuff" the icing on the cake was a pair of as new aftermarket Carlson Long Beard turkey chokes! The finger twist type with porting.

After checking the bores I couldn't even tell if it was fired. The only downside was finding out about the stupid gravity safety that engages when the gun is held at around 30°. I assume this is to avoid shooting one's toes with such short barrels....thank you lawyers of the world (said no one, ever). Removed the stock, pushed out the pin, pulled out the little pendulum and voila....normalcy abounds! Looks like the shorty Winchester pump will be sitting out the spring turkey season.
