After swapping out your barrel for a shorter one, did you guys call the CFC to update your registration certificates? Did you have to get it re-verified? The registration certificate for my 10/22 states "Barrel Length 470mm or greater".

If anything changes the category of a firearm, or a description is no longer valid as originally presented, it's a good idea to let the CFC know. I rebarrelled a couple of long guns to new chamberings (wildcats), and decided to inform them. The process of updating my certificates was painless, and I had the new certs in about 2-3 weeks. On the long chance that one might get stopped by some ambitious cop when carrying or transporting, then at least the description fits the firearm exactly. Regards, Eagleye.

Doesn't it say somewhere that you only need to notify them of changes in calibre and changes that affect its status?

Believe that is so. however, having the short barrel info on a certificate may save you a hassle and time wasted if you are ever stopped by an LEO who isn't as conversant with the rules as you are. Also, I don't beleive a change of calibre affects its status ( restrixcted, non restricted, or prohibited) either.

change of caiber could effec it if you changed it to .25 or .32

I'm still running the factory barrrel - I was just curious how big a hassle it would be to update the registration cert because as JohnC pointed out, an LEO comparing your rifle to your reg cert would likely conclude that apples<>oranges. Toss in a little Ontario fear-factor of a "tactical" looking 10-22 and depending on who stopped you, you could have a lot of explaining to do.

How many LEO's even know what 470mm is much less how to measure barrel length? According to CFC you only have to tell them about changes to your gun if it changes the guns classification.

I wonder if anybody (with a shorty rimfire barrel) has actually tried to update their registration certificate? I know it legal and that the rimfire rifle remains non-restricted provided it's OAL >26", but the "Barrel length 470mm or greater" part on the certificate is still a little troubling for me.

I suppose I could always call the CFC and ask. I just thought someone here would have already done that.

I did and according to the tech I talked to you can reregister but you do not have to as long as the firearm stays in the same class. That said he also said that it wouldn't hurt to do it anyways but I personally don't believe in telling them anything more than I have to by law.

Good thread. I also need this info, 'cause I recently bought a 10/22 compact (with a stock 16 1/8" barrel; so below 470mm)... but i swapped the barrel with a 11.5". OAL remains above 26" so it remains unrestricted. I haven't received my certificate yet. I'm pretty sure it won't say "below 470mm", but most probably the exact barrel lenght. Any 10/22 compact owners can confirm this ?

worry

I know I'll take heat for saying this. Why all the worrying about this issue? The way I see it, stay above the 26" limit and don't worry about it. As long as your not using your rifle for illegal activity nobody is going to question a couple of inches in length. If you got stopped and this weapon is in your vehicle, as long as it is being transported legally(ie; locked), the authorities most likely could care less about the length. JMHO.
