Short barrel shotguns and hunting/shooting live game?

i have owned and shot several different guns ranging from 8 inch dlask, 12 inch dlask, 14 inch mossberg and remington and 18 inch barreled winchester.some of these guns i shot well and others i shot poorly. the eight inch gun will take small birds at twenty yards with a cylinder choke and 7 and a half shot .i have shot slugs on paper to fifty yards with good results.the mossberg gun and the Winchester with 14 inch and 18 inch cylinder barrels did not work for me . the mossberg did not fit me being short in the stock and i can not come up with a good excuse for the winchester other than my ability.my favourite short barrel gun is a wingmaster with a 12 inch dlask barrel and screw in chokes. the stock has a cheek piece like a rifle and fits me very well .lots of ground hogs at ranges of thirty yards, number four shot modifed choke .

$100 and a good gunsmith fixed all my concerns with the pattern. Had my Marine Magnum threaded for rem chokes. Purchased 4 custom cryo treated polished stainless steel extended and ported chokes. Skeet 1, mod, x full and a fun one, card shooter. I've taken dozens of rabbits and an unknown number of squirrels with this rig. Even though I've got it rigged for an extreme tactical shotty atm, I still plan on throwing my home made plug in it this year and taking aim at any small game and upland birds that cross my path. I may not recommend the exact chokes I purchased but if you are serious about hunting with a short shotty, getting it threaded by a competant gunsmith may fix a lot of issues and make it much more usable in the field. BTW cardshooter choke looks like about the opening of a 410 and has about a 6" pattern at 50 yards. Hurts like hell too. Most of the rabbits were taken with the mod choke and #4 steel (ya overkill, but passes clean through and very quick finish, bonus I've never had a pellet in my table fare)
