Hello,
Just wondering how much velocity you would lose by switching a 20" barrel to a 12" barrel on a 10-22?

Thanks
Eric

I don't believe any, the powder is burned up in the first 16-18 inches so after that you get a pressure drop not increase.

So a 12" barreled 10-22 wouldn't have the power of a pellet gun?

Eric

if your doing really far target shooting or something then you might notice a difference, but other than that you wont see any changes. Just think of a handgun and how short the barrel is

The bullets do lose speed, but the pellet gun comment is not even close to accurate. A 6 grain pellet has way less power than a 40 grain chunk of lead moving at the same velocity.
My friends ruger 10-22 with a 12 inch barrel shoots 800-850 fps over a chrony

The optimum barrel length for a .22 is 16" from what I remember reading on Rimfire Central.
