Short Barreled Ruger 10/22

Since the 18.5 rule only applies to semi-auto centerfire rifles, a 16.5 inch Ruger 10/22 should be non-restricted also right? Where could you buy one of these? As I have only ever seen the 18.5 inch versions for sale.

You can buy 8" barrels. Dlask, i think. As long as you pas the 26" rule you are good to go.

Barry from Bits of Peices would be the guy to deal with in regards to 10/22 barrels. If he doesn't have a particular barrel in stock he can likely order one in for you. He is an official Green Mountain barrel distributor. The 10/22 pictured is mine with an 18 inch Green Mountain barrel that Barry also GunKoted with matte black. The accuracy is amazing, and they are extremely well made barrels. They come in several different sizes, including 16 inch. Here's a link to his site.

The SR-22 version has a 16" barrel and so does the 10/22 Compact version, both are available in Canada.

Not to hijack, but for those of you who went Dlask, what's your opinion on the sporter vs extreme (Bentz) chamberings?

Thanks,
Cal.

What is your intention for your gun... benchrest or plinker or hunter? Go with the Xtreme chamber for a bench gun and the Sporter chamber for everything else.

I have both and unless supreme accuracy was a must, I would choose the Sporter every time... note that Dlask's Sporter chamber is tighter than the sloppy factory chamber.

Extraction of a live round with the extreme chamber wasn't possible with my factory extractor and requires the use of a knife to get the round out. I'm upgrading to a sharper after market extractor to see if that helps. So, if your hunting with it like Hoyt said, go with the sporter.

Hi Chem,

Please let us know how your new extractor works for you. I don't really have a concrete use for it yet. I'm currently spending 99.99% of my shooting time at the range, so in that regard accuracy would be paramount...that being said I want it reliable. Does anyone have any experience running American Eagle 40gr through an Extreme chamber? That's pretty much my goto round.

Thanks,
Cal.

I just re-read your post and notice you speak of extracting a live round. Any issue extracting spent casings?

Thanks,
Cal.

There shouldn't be. The reason that it is hard to extract a live round from a match chamber is that the bullet is engraved well into the lands and the extractor can't pull hard enough to get the bullet free from the lands. Once the round is fired the brass comes out just fine.

I picked up an 11.5" Green mountain sporter profile barrel, the threaded portion just protruded past the factory stock.

I then bought a second hand laminate stock last week and cut it back to were the barrel band was and added a swivel stud to the bottom of the forend.
