Short barreled shotguns

Have you shot this yet? Without a taller front sight I'm wondering how high the SG is hitting.
I guess it doesn't matter too much in close quarters.....

Not shoot it yet I just installed the shockwave grip last night :) can’t wait to try this little beast I will let you know for the sight

grelmar....how do you like the Ricol o/u? I'm kicking myself for not buying one when Corwin Arms was selling them.

It's up there with my 858... It'll be in my Viking Longboat with me when they push my carcass out to sea.

I've come to realize the exact same thing.

Only under 14" I have now and will keep is a 12" Dlask barrel I can swap on if for some reason the "need" is there.

Under 14" and 12" are fun, but not all that practical, even for bear defense IMO.

Blasty, and you lose a considerable amount of power and have to exercise some caution in pumping it, depending on your fore end setup.

Fun to shoot though, and handy, although you're pushing the point of diminishing gains as far as handiness goes in going much below 14" IMO.

Replaceable chokes can be very handy. I have one Turkey shotgun with a 22 inch barrel and rifle type sights. With its colonial screw in choke, improved modified, it gives tight groups at 25-40 yards with .625 caliber Wild Hog buckshot.
This combination, it does have recoil impulse much more akin to 10 gauge magnum though.

I’ve come to feel the same way, I put a 14” barrel on my grizzly but my favourite barrel length is 20”. They all have chokes though, that’s a must in a shotgun for me. My 12.5” and 28” barrels just collect dust. If I can get the 12.5” one threaded it will find a use otherwise it’s a paperweight.

I have a 14" Remington 870 barrel threaded for Rem-Chokes as well as a 14" 590a1 threaded for Rem-Chokes. It certainly is a great option.

If your 12.5" is a thicker Dlask barrel you can easily get it threaded with any of the choke systems. If it's the thin walled Dominion Arms barrel you can get it threaded with Tru-Chokes for thin walls. A few guys on here have had it done.

It’s a DA barrel, I’ve mic’d wall thickness etc and was talking with my local gunsmith and it looks like one of the two I have access to will be thick enough to thread it I decide to. Right after we talked a 14” barrel popped up on the EE that had been externally threaded for a saiga choke adaptor that takes win chokes for a good price. For a bit more cash than threading my 12.5” I got a barrel, adaptor and three chokes and a nasty breacher, I picked it up and have been having fun with it hunting grouse. People I know laugh when I tell them I hunt with it but stop laughing when they see me hammer grouse with it. It’s fun as hell and I’m finally glad to have a use for it, a gun should be used as far as I’m concerned.

Im trying to think of a way to make a front sight post for the saiga adaptor, without the red dot on it the poi/poi of the shot pattern is real high. I’m going to make a post and silver solder it on the adaptor at some point to line up with the channel down the middle of the picatinny rail, winter project I think.

Some years ago, CanAm had a run of 12.5” grizzly barrels with a front rifle sight and already threaded with win chokes.

How much of a difference are people noticing with a choke on a short barrel? I saw a YouTube video where buckshot had a decent pattern with a 14” barrel even when compared to a longer choked barrel at closer ranges .... I suspect that birdshot and longer distances is where we would see the most difference with a choke?

Depending on the choke constriction and brand of ammo it’s a big difference over an open cylinder, barrel length doesn’t affect shot pattern as much as choke constriction. Barrel length will affect muzzle velocity more than anything, a mod choke will shoot the same pattern at set distances regardless of barrel length. At least that’s my experience when patterning my shotguns.

I like removable chokes on a short barrel if only to get the pattern size of bulk birdshot down to roughly the same size as those of my chosen buckshot load at reasonable distances.

Which of course makes practice a lot cheaper and more realistic.

Many of those options aren't available new anymore. The 8.5/12.5 grizzlies and barrels, 14" Mossbergs and a few others are only available used now. Occasionally someone gets some 14" Mossbergs but they're not being imported right now. You can still buy the 14" conversion kit and Dlask makes short 870 barrels. I think the last big shipment of 14" 870 barrels have all sold, not likely to find one in stock. So nowadays you have your choice of cheap Turkish short shotguns or pricier used grizzlies, mossbergs or building one with pricier parts. The days of $300 grizzlies and $600 14" 590A1's are gone unfortunately.

Ummm I'd go Turkish over Chinese every day of the week

Turkish are lighter weight and smoother operating out of the box.

The only Chinese ones are the PD/DA Grizzly. They are tougher built and heavier weight.

The Hatsan models are the best of the Turkish shorties IMO.
