Has anyone made such a thing?
Would it help with buckshot pattern in a short barrel?

By short I mean the 19" - 20" security barrels.

Sure they aree out there, or you can take your barrel to a gunsmith and have it threaded for choles. Buckshot, at least the larger sizes, tends to work best from an open choke, but I seldom use the stuff and there might be others out there with better information.

Usually buckshot patterns best with more open chokes, and the factory short barrels are usually cylinder bore. Having the barrel fitted with tubes could allow experimentation, and would certainly make the gun more versatile for hunting.

Remington makes a 20" 870 barrel with choke tubes. Their 18.5" barrels can come with fixed cylinder or Improved Cylinder depending on the model. They made 14" barrels in both cylinder and modified.

When shooting buckshot I like some choke. At 25 yards there are too many holes in the pattern for my liking with cylinder choke. I use either modified or improved cylinder for buckshot.

Thanks for the input guys.

Yah I have one of those Mav' 88's and the short barrel it comes with is a 19" with cylinder bore, while the extra 26" barrel I bought is Improved Cylinder.

Myself an a bunch of local nuts where milling this over at the local range the other day, and wondering about such things...like what is the benefit of a slightly longer barrel etc?

I'm going to take my shorter barrel down and see if the Gunsmith has the mentioned patternmaster or wad wizard choke on hand. I'll keep yah posted on my project. :D

Likely won't have the chokes on hand. Really hard to find in Canada. Likely have to order it from the US. There around 100 bucks, but I think the performance is well worth it.

Both companies have websites.

Mossberg makes a 20" barrel with choke tubes to fit the 500 and 88. Wholesale lists them for $160, including 3 chokes. This might be cheaper than having the 19" barrel threaded, assuming it is thick enough to be done. Since the Mossberg chokes interchange with Win-choke, Browning Invector and others, the companies Waterfowler mentioned probably make chokes that will fit.
