Short-'er' barrel length PCCs?

Hi Folks,
I'm casually shopping for a PCC (no handgun cope and wanting to go IPSC/3gun/etc) and originally had my eye on the Raven 9 but the barrel length is excessive to me. I see FX9 has shorter barrel length options and was wondering if anyone had experience with the 8 vs 10 inch (4.5 seems a tad short but may have its merits ). Also any thoughts on other manufacturer offerings would be most welcome .

-RPAL holder so no issues with restricted for what it;s worth these days .
-unabashed tacticool guy so prefer black and scary except for actual hunting gear
-very new to sports shooting overall so looking for reliability / practicality

I bought the 4 inch upper for my fx-9 along with the TT trigger pack and a few other goodies it's one of the favorites to play with, just for the compact size and does whatever i need it to do within in 50 yards. " our range distance lol"

I've never seen the barrel off of a Raven or FX9, but do they not both use standard AR barrels? Should be able to buy a Faxon or whatever in whatever barrel length you want?

There's no appreciable difference in accuracy between the 8 or 10 inch FX9. The only thing to consider there IMO is rail space. The 8 is a bit tight if you want to run a foregrip and another toy (laser, light, etc.). I do love how the 8 inch handles.

The FX9 has some quirks. To do it all over again I'd probably look at something like the PC9 with some mods. I'm intrigued by what ATRS is doing.

If you don't mind the aesthetics of the taticooled-up Ruger PC9, then that would by my first recommendation. Inexpensive, reliable, reasonably accurate and simple to operate and work on. That said, if you start opting for a bunch of aftermarket parts, your price could easily exceeed that of the Freedom Ordnance FX-9 (see below).

The Freedom Ordnance FX-9 is a "Tacticool" looking PCC right out of the box with either the 8"or 10" Barrel length. It is plenty accurate, and mine has been extremely reliable using bulk ball ammo right from the get-go. It is a hard-to-beat choice at right around $1400 equipped to run (less optic and BUIS) right out of the box!

At $2630 there is the Kriss Vector Gen 2 (+) in .22 LR, 9mm or .45 ACP. My .45 ACP has been a flawless performer and the rigidity of the new folding Buttstock is excellent compared to the older polymer Buttstock. With the improved ergos, serviceable accuracy and excellent reliability thus far, I cannot complain about the Kriss Vector.

If you care a great deal about looks and resale value, then I would recommend either the B+T GHM9 or the APC9, depending on your specific tastes. Both are utterly reliable and as accurate as any competing PCC. The GHM is more simple in design and less expensive at $2335 than the APC9 at $4770, although the latter ships with an Aimpoint T-1 for the extra $$, while holding the edge in the looks department as well IMHO. Each to their own, as either is an excellent PCC choice. As are also the B+T TP-9 ($3855 with Aimpoint T-1) and SPC9 at $4240 with Aimpoint T-1). All of the B+T PCCs are excellent performers. Accuracy and reliability being equally excellent, the decision really rests upon your preferred overall size and/or the operating system.

NOTE: The can is an Inert Display Model, and is so marked (and plugged).

If you are wiling to entertain the idea of adopting an entirely new cartridge, then the FN USA PS-90 may be for you. At a landed cost of approx $2500 CAD in its 16" Barrel configuration, you still have a ways to go to "completion" as a 10.4" SBR. Obtain a Barrel and Factory Muzzle Device from CMMG for under $500 landed and you can do the Barrel swap yourself if even moderately skilled with basic hand tools (incl Dremel). Add an Optic such as the Ring Sights "Secret Service Sgiht" for $600 and you are looking at around $3600 for a "Complete and correct" PS-90, plus however many 5/50 mags it takes to satisfy your comfort level. Ammo is actually not terribly expensive, all things considered.

The FAMAE SAF PCC can be a great PCC as well, provided that you have a source for inexpensive replacement plastic magazine bodies or the new $200 steel magazines from Tactical Imports. I have the .40 S&W version which comes wtih steel magazines and it has been a fantastic performer. It packs quite a whallop when shooting steel, so I can only imagine what it would do to clsoe-range varmints. Unfortunately the FAMAE PCCs are terribly expensive when they do occasionally come available for sale. Expedt to pay $3600 if you find a real deal, otherwise $4K(+) is not out of the ordinary.

At the higher end we have the Polish BRS-99, a PCC based on the PM-84 Glaubyert SMG. Available either Restricted with the factory SMG-length Barrel or Non-Restricted with the long, shrouded Barrel, the BRS-99 will set you back between $3600 for a bare-bones restricted model to $4500 for a NR model with spare Restricted Barrel, extra Magazines, etc. They are a reliable, accurate PCC with surprisingly decent ergonomics aside from the horrendously huge Grip girth.

At the high end of the food-chain there is the HK UMP-45 (SF) which will set you back upwards of $12K for an authentic example or approximately $7K for a Tom Bostic USC conversion (like mine below). These are surprisingly poor PCCs (and SMGs) due to excessive Bolt-Bounce and Perceived Recoil which is not offset by the flex-prone polymer Buttstock. Not a terribly pleasant shooter, but I had to have one in the collection..

@Bartok5 thanks, I hope you enjoyed writing that up as much as I did reading it. I had overlooked that the APC9 comes with $1k worth of Aimpoint optics, I was struggling to make the price jump over the GHM9 until learning that.
I note the Ace1Arms mag release on the Vector, I just missed out on a Laylax import. I like the ulner technique (karate chop) for mag release, but would like to have the option for trigger hand release too so will continue to search!

Re: PC9 - you can still have PC Charger imported sans receiver via IRG. That’s an extra grand into the wind, but you get a full set of spare parts for the PC9 and the cool 6.5” barrel assembly, hot swappable into NR PC9.

Add a folding buttstock and you have probably the most compact PCC on the market: with the barrel off, it fits into Nanuk 910 case.

Also, PC9 trigger uses the same guts as 10/22. Volquartsen kits, I heard, work really well. Kidd trigger job kit is not compatible with PC9 as it causes all kinds of interesting malfunctions.

Had an FX-9 for about 3 months now, around 2k rounds down the barrel, runs perfect! have both 18.5" and 10" uppers and loving running it with a 10" for IDPA. Super reliable, accurate and fun to shoot.

First thing to note is that shorter is not always better. Generally, 10.5" is a really great length since it maintains good ballistic performance, is handy enough to maneuver, but not so short that you have to sacrifice your natural support hand position. I'm 6'2" and 10.5" is as short as I would go.

SPC-9 if you've got money, but I've even seen those have reliability issues.

The Raven is the recommendation I would make if you're left handed, you can swap to any 9mm AR barrel that you want. As far as I know it's the only PCC on the market with AR compatible barrels. FX-9 would need to be modified. My Faxon came in just over $200 from RDSC so as far as barrels go, they're pretty cheap.

FX9 would be the second choice, but anyone who has owned both the Raven and FX9 can attest the FX9 feels like a cheap toy in comparison.

The Ruger is probably the least reliable PCC that I've personally seen at matches. Its design also makes it non-competitive for practical shooting.

My 18.5" B&T SPC9 is a dream to shoot. I ran it at a PCC match a few weeks ago and it performed flawlessly.

As Bartok mentions, the Aimpoint is $1K of the price...annoying to be forced to buy the optic, but it is also the perfect optic for it, so hard to complain.

I run a Ruger and an FX9, compete against ravens and B&T's...and like 2024 newly minted PCC champion Taylor Reich recently said and I'm paraphrasing here "their is NO blowback 9 currently on the Canadian market that is flawless. I've seen FX9, Rugers, Ravens, B&T's all have mechanical issues that can cost you a match. The only ones that run perfect are the high-end competition guns like JP9's that we can't have up here."

So, it's really a personal preference thing and which you are comfortable spending the money on. I have over $1000 into my Ruger to make it comp ready, I'm $600 into my fx9 and counting. I've seen ravens break firing pins, infact quite a few (bad design and proprietary unfortunately), B&T's jam up and fail to feed...
It's a pick your poison, learn it's deficiencies, correct what can be corrected and train with it so if an issue arises you know exactly how to deal with it. Know your gun better than you know yourself.

@Bartok5 , very helpful overview of all the option, I am very grateful (and legit jealous lol)
Thanks everyone else for teh very helpful feedback and input.
Alas it does seem to be a pick your poison if one is to keep the budget to around 1500 or so (where the F9 kinda sits).
Seeing as the FX9 seems impossible to find in stock and that i'd already been eyeing a Raven for 556, I sense a money-pit situaion creeping in (get raven 556, get raven kit for 9mm , get shorter barrel and handguard , cry, fidn fx9 in stock, get that ... etc.. lol) . I'll be keeping an eye out over the coming few weeks to see what the stock situation looks like .

blinged up looks pretty sick i;ll admit :).
will be a tough choice between 8 and 10 for sure (may end up being a "what;s in stock" matter.

I like my mall ninja Ruger PCC 9mm. I've put 2 or 3 thousand rounds through it and I've never had it apart for a proper full clean. Shoots great, but a short barrel and fore end would definitely make it faster for gun game stuff.
