I just bought my Remington 700 SPS varmint in 308 and I want to remove to stock and upgrade it to a HS precision or a Mcmullin Stock, but I have been trying to find out how to tell if I have a short or long action. I have tried the search and google, but I can’t find a process to tell if I have a short or long action can some how help me?

Remington makes two lengths of 700 receivers. Within the two lengths, the feed setup varies according to the mag. system and the caliber.

The only way to tell is by looking at the length (there are only two sizes) if you think a .308 round will just fit into the action (little bit more or less) or better yet if you think a .30-06 round won't fit into the action you have a short action. If the action looks like it can comfortably take a .30-06 or 300 Win Mag you have a long. (That is the way I can tell)

Center to center the trigger guard screws are 6 and 1/2" apart in a short action... about 7 and 3/8" in a long action.

Rem. Actions only come in the two sizes, regardless if standard or magnum cal.'s
.223 to.308Win./.338Fed. incl. all WSM/RSUM> Short Action
.25-06-.35 Whelen incl. all Standard Magnums & RUM's> Long Action
Most medium sized rnds such as the .257 Roberts/6.5 Swede/7mm MSR are usually found in 'Custom Shop' versions or 'Limited' run' rifles & can usually be found on the Long Actions! One exception on the rule is the 6.5-284; as they seem to place this under the short action rnd catagory? Oke if the standard parent-rnd is concerned, but badly handicapped in seating-length with the use of 6.5mm projectiles in the 6.5-284 cal. designation!
