Short range deer bullet???

I used a hornady superformance 150sst last year on a white tail. Was at 39 yards. The hole in it was the size of a fist from entrance to exit. The guy I was hunting with shot a smaller white tail buck at 40 yards with a 7mm rem mag using 165gr winchers superx it passed through but didnt expand. We found the deer 70 yards away

I found that the round-nosed Remington 180gr. Corelokts (R308W2) were
more than adequate for me, for both deer & moose.
I gave up "counting" years ago, but took some 10 to 15 deer and four moose that I specifically recall with the .308 and this ammunition. Most were in the 20-60 yard range typical to the bush of the Muskoka Parry-Sound district.
No complaints with either caliber or ammunition !

At that range I'd use a scattergun myself but may I suggest reduced recoil loads. Lower velocity gets a lot less "jelloed" meat. There's not a lot of meat of a deer ribs but I know a high velocity bullet at close range leaves a hell of a mark

Thats for sure. Shot a small buck with a 270WSM at about 35 yards.......exit hole was almost big enough to put my fist through without getting bloody.

Traded that gun the following year, dont regret it at all.

The 180 grain Core-Lokts will work well at that range. When I have used them in the past if the deer is bigger it can leave a larger exit hole. Only solution is to get a smaller caliber rifle, reduced recoil loads, or reload down for that distance.
