Short range thumper suggestions.

Yup, it will have some snap... 225 Accubond at 3.385" moving at 3100+ fps should do quite a lot... will test it on a spring bear and then carry for moose... will do a range report in a month or so.

Your choice is of course, your choice, and zero wrong with it.
Why the 225 when a 250 grainer should still move out at around 3000fps?
From experience, that case has plenty of room.
Thanks!
R.

I want this rifle to do something different than my .350 Rem Mag with 250 Partitions... under 250 yards, it won't do anything different... so I'm setting it up to reach out and touch something.

Alright. I'll bite. How far is far, no ish about it?
R.

Well... this is all theoretical, since the rifle is still under construction, but most would consider a .300 WM with 180 Accubond @ 2900 with an MPBR (5" radius) of 350 yards to be a pretty decent long range "hunting" rifle (note - "hunting")... this .358/375 has the potential to surpass that by 20 yards, with an MPBR of 370 yards. Again, this is hypothetical, pending real world testing, but should it come up a little short of that, it is still a dandy hunting rifle carrying close to 5K ft/lb energy.

That's great, and thanks for that. Now... what are the rifle specs, and scope selected? : )
So many questions!
A 250 grain 338 Accubond has gone over 3000 fps in that case. You'll not have issues with the numbers you have.

Ruger M77 Mark II Stainless... previously a .338 Win Mag, barrel is a 22" M77 MKII .350 Rem Mag barrel, rechambered. The scope is a Leupold VX-3 3.5-10X40 B&C.

Greg,

Bevan King’s 35-404 IMPs were built to chamber the full length 404 Jeffery case blown out with a 40 degree shoulder. The one I had drove 250 bullets close to 3300 FPS with good case life. The Swift 250 was the only bullet that would hold together on game at ranges less than 200 yards.

My Nine Norma drives 250s well past 2800. Your case should easily reach 3000 with sane loads.

Great project! Keep us posted.
Ted

My short range thumper so to speak is a Tikka T3 in 338Federal with a 20” barrel. I have bigger too, but this is just about perfect for thick type timber hunting.

Yikes! That is a bruiser... I have never seen that cartridge, Ted, but over 6K ft/lb energy can do an awful lot.

Edit; a thought just occured to me; I recalled a P.O Ackley quote from a letter he wrote to Bevan King and I am wondering if he was referencing this cartridge?

P.O Ackley to Bevan King;

"If you look through my Volume I book you will find that about 2,800 fps is about all anyone has been able to get out of a .35 caliber 250-grain bullet, regardless of what case is used. So anyone claiming 3,400 is either using some highly specialized system or he is a liar. And I am pretty much of the opinion that the latter is correct.”

Should have same performance as a 358 STA, probably have similar case capacity.

I think it will come up shy of the STA, by 100 fps or so... but with cheap, readily available brass. To be honest, the project only got off the ground because I had everything but the dies and reamer on hand... made for a quick and (relatively) inexpensive tool.

If we are.now talking about heavy rifles and wildcats. How about Pounder's Nanook rifle.....Rem 700 375 rum....docked to 20". I have another Weatherby MkV 340.....bought from Ted...a few posters up. The 340 wea pushes 225 and 250 right where Greg's 35/375 would. Brass availability is the problem, since i like to have headstamps actually reflect reality.

What I was thinking as well...

My short - long range thumper is my shortened to 21" barreled Rem 700 LSS in 375RUM.

With a Leupold VX3 4.5x14x40mm B&C scope mounted on Leupold QRW bases with QRW rings I shoot 260gr Accubonds @ 3020fps I consistently get 5" - 6" 500 yard 3 shot groups with this combo.

When I'm using it for close in defense I remove the scope and mount onto the rear scope base a XS Sights Tall Weaver ghost ring backup sight front sight is a NECG banded sight with a tall red fiber optic post.

Loaded with 350gr TTSX - Woodleighs - North Face bullets @ 2450fps I consistently get cloverleaf 50 yard groups.
