So, I was wondering what people were finding was the best setting for 25 and 50 yards with a smle, barrel mounted site. Even out to 100(but that is beyond my skill currently)
Just had my first time to the range with it, at as close as it would go, was about 4” low at 25. At 400 yards setting, it was pretty much center, at 25 and 50.
I am not a great shot, my goal is to be proficient by fall.

Federal 180 grain sp, the intent is for this to be my deer rifle, maybe bear too.

Thank you all

Your rifle is telling you something. If you want to shoot at close range, use the sight setting that gives POA/POI. Doesn't matter in the least what the numbers say.

If you want to zero the rifle as would have been done in service, set the target up at 30y, set the sight at 200, and change front sights until the rifle is zeroed for elevation. Once this is done, the range graduations on the sight will be approxiamately correct. Of course, that is with issue Mk.VII ball. Front sights came in numerous heights to provide for zeroing.

So it is not uncommon to have to set these military rifles way out there to line up for short twinge hunting distance?
I was expecting it to shoot high, not low, because the shortest distance setting was 175 yards, and a couple things I read said 200 yard setting shot about 2” high at 100 yards( the “correct” way to site in an enfeild, I read)
It was always my plan to record the difrent settings for ‘point blank’ with difrent loads. What apprised me was the baseline.
But this was sporterised long befor I got it, it could have been adjusted after military use by someone else.

Fun to shoot though!
